Welcome to National Security Anarchists (NSA) first Newsletter. We are
pretty much unlike other groups out there in that H/P wasteland. We are more
interested in providing new ideas, and new information. Now everyone can
scan, hack codes, hack unix. Now in order to further these abilities we must
take a look at the new technology that most of you have overlooked. From
just looking at these new ideas and concepts, you can develop you H/P skills
even more. Now the release of NSA Newsletter will come out when damn ready

== Teleos Access Server, The Missing Switch? ==
The Access Server is Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) located in the
position formerly occupied by a T1 multiplexor. The Access Server is a
switch that allows simultaneous Bandwidth-On-Demand access to each of the 23
64 Kbps B channels on the PRI interface.
The Teleos Access Server was designed to add value through switched access
to those emerging switched digital network services. Specific interface
cards are then added to the Access Server for each type of access (premises
or netowrk) desired. End users no longer need to provision T1 channels among
voice, data, image, and videoconferencing. Currently, network interfaces are
available for T1 and PRI in all the protocol formats used by North American
Inter-Exchange and Local Exchange Carriers. Premises-side interfaces are
availbable for T1, PRI, BRI, IBM token Ring and V.35 (through the Teleos
Escort PRI TA).
A Teleos Access Server will serve as the single point of switched digital
network access from teh store. Older PBXs will be connected to the Access
Server via a Teleos T1 interface. An IBM 3174 Controller and a workstation
will be attached to the Token Ring. All access from the store with the
exception of local voice and local data calls will be via PRI.
CICS applications such as Inventory, Pricing, Payroll, etc. willl run on an
IBM Series 1 processor. Both the Series 1 and the Token Ring will connect to
a modem sharing device for access to a 9.6 Kbps leased line for SDLC access
to an IBM 3090 host processor. Credit card verifications for business
customers will be directed to the Series 1 which permits access to the host.
A key application driving the network architecture involes image transfer
technology, which could lead to the presentation of high resolution images to
the store's merchandiser to assist in selecting styles and colors of
merchandise to make available in their stores. The images can reside on the
file server or the mainframe at the data center. They are accessed using a
high-resolution PC workstation with a graphical user interface. In trails
thus far, the call setup time through the IAP6000 Access Server hs been less
then two seconds.
The IAP6000 Access Server at the data center haso nly a Token Ring
interface on the premises side, and is connected on the network side over a
direct access PRI to MCI's DMS-250.
Teleos Communications has forecast that using switched digital services
rather than dedicated T1 network will save about 27% in recurring monthly
network operating charges for this netowrk.
Note:
Teleos, together with Network Software Associates (NSA), is pleased to
announce the availabbility of a PC-based 3270 emulation application. This
product is compatible with IBM's new 3174 Establishment Controller
equipped with the recently announced Basic Rate Interface (BRI) adapter.
When used with these new IBM products, the Teleos/NSA soution allows
ISA bus PCs to achieve 3270 terminal access and printer in an IBM S370 or
S390 environment via local or remote cluster controllers. The product
solution consists of AdaptSNA 3270 Emulator software form NSA and Teleos'
B101PC Terminal Adapter.

The Teleos Escort is a Primary Rate Interface Terminal Adapter (PRI TA)
that lets you leverage the power of the switched digital network by offering
access to a wide variety of high-speed switches services. These include AT&T
ACCUNET Switched Digital Services (56,64,336,384, and 1536Kbps), MCI Vnet
Switched 56, and U.S. Sprint VP 56.
The Escort's unique Bandwith-On-Demand feature allows you to dial up
network bandwidth for applications on an "as needed" basis. You pay only for
the bandwidth you use and access it only when you need it, resulting in a
reduction in overall transmission costs. This feature makes the Escort
ideally suited for applications such as videoconferencing.
The Escort supports dual standard RS366 dialing interfaces that let you
access the direct dialing capabilities of video codecs. The Escort also
provides an interface for serial, synchronous host communication via dual
V.35 or dual RS449/RS530. Thus, by using the codec's keypad, you can easily
establish a videoconference with a remote video codec.
Escort options include an intergrated T1 Channel Service Unit (CSU), which
allows direct connection to the T1 line without additional external
equipment, and a Multi-Channel Synchronization feature, which provides the
capablity to bundle 56/64 Kbps channels into n X 64 increments
Simply put, the Escort allows you to link customers, suppliers, and
strategic partner over Switched Digital Networks with the flexibility and
cost efficiency of Bandwidth-On-Demand.

Teleos Access Servers give corporate end users the "best of both worlds":
Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Hybrid Private Networks (HPN). These
networks deliver advance services over the more flexible and cost-effective

This GTE Government Systems project has the broad, year 2000 objective
to develop an advanced military tactical communication system
architecture and software/hardware prototypes based on the most advanced
field-qualified technologies. The first year of this multiyear project
effort was in the year 1990.
First, a set of preliminary operational requirements was put together.
The original objective for this project was for a MSE (mobile subscriber
equipment) replacement, using the most modern technology, suitable for
deployment in European terrain. However, the most changes in the
world's geopolitical scence required a more general perspective. The
first operational requirements considered were the following:
@ Radio access only --- no wirelines required.
@ Moveability --- near-instantaneous take-down, set-up
@ Security, privacy.
@ Low probability of detection --- no radiation hotspots to reveal presence
@ Jamming resistant.
@ Ubiquitous low and medium band switching. Selective broadband switching.
@ Interoperability with other communication systems
@ Survivability/reliability.
@ Minimal size and weight.
@ Position location.
@ Dialing by spoken name or unit or number.
A baseline architecture was conceived to meet these requirements.
This architecture has the following capabilities:
@ Phased array antennas permitting electronic variation of the
number of beams and their gains.
@ An all-radio interface using Spread Spectrum/Code Division
Multiple Access (SS/CDMA) for the line side and trunk side signals.
@ A single size Electronics Vehicle (EV) containing all system
eletronics; radio transceivers, antennas, and switches.
This architecture, in the principle, meets all the operational
requirements. The universal SS/CDMA meets those requirements
relating to the radio interface. The great mobility of this
architecture allows communication to begin as soon as the vehicle
stops. The system self-configures, without prior planning. The
Electronic Vehicle nodes (Look at diagram below) seek EV identifies
itself; The mobile station's presence in the coverage zone of the
new EV automatically promulgates to all other system nodes; any
mobile station found can receive calls.
In 1991, further definition of this baseline architecture, the
consideration of different architectures, and the continuing
assessment of applicable technologies, will continue.

The objective of this multiyear project is to develop advanced network
planning systems that will assist planners in producing cost-effective
facility expansion plans for the cellular networks used by GTE mobilnet
and the interoffice networks used by the telcos. The project aims to
develop graphical, easy to use systems that employ state-of-the-art
optimization algorithms, allowing the planners to use them interactively
to evaluate several alternatives and generate cost-effective plans.
During 1990, the research effort focused mainly on developing a
facilities planning system for the cellular networks used by GTE
Mobilnet. This system comprised optimization algorithms for determining
minimum-cost facility plans for the rapidly growing networks and
cost-effective network topologies that provide a desired level of
reliability. The graphical interface for these algorithms is currently
being developed using X-windows/Motif presentation graphics and the Unix
operating system to ensure the portability of the tools to alternative
hardware platforms, and the future compatibility with other planning
systems.
A related task, that originated in response to a request from the GTE
Government Systems staff working on the Airfone ][ project, focused on
the design of the terrestrail facility network that connects the ground
stations to the Airfone switches.
INTERCONNECT FACILITIES PLANNING SYSTEM FOR GTE MOBILNET
Mobile telephone services are expected to be one of the fastest
growing areas of telecommunications over the next decade, and this rapid
growth in the customer base will require a corresponding growth in the
network facilities. A fundamental problem that arises in designing the
facilities network for a cellular system is to determine how to expand
the capacity of the facilities over a given planning time horizon to
meet projected demand at minimum cost. The transmission facilities used
in the cellular systems are either privately owned (e.g. microwave) or
leased from the local telcos (T1s, fiber). The capacity expansion plan
has to determine where and when to place concentrators in the network,
what type of concentrators to use, which cell sites to connect to each
of the hubs, which cells to connect directly to the Mobil Telephone
Switching Office, and what facilities to use on each of the links.
Optimizaion algorithms were developed to address these questions, and
the graphical interface for the system is currently under development.
In addition, preliminary work was completed on alogorithms to determine
the network topology that should be deployed to survive any single link
failure. A prototype system was presented to the Mobilnet staff for
feedback and is currently under revision. The transfer of the
alpha-version to Mobilnet is expected in the first half of 1991.
Figure Below illustrates the output of the prototype system. This is
the final design toplolgy for a representative network; it shows where
the concentrators should be located and how the cell sites should be
connected to the hubs and to the Mobil Telephone Switching Office
located at Warrensville Heights, Ohio.

FACILITIES PLANNING FOR THE TERRESTRIAL NETWORK FOR AIRFONE ][
Due to the advent of new technology and the expected increase in
demand for air-to-ground telecommunications services, GTE Airfone is
currently considering the design and implementation of a new system,
called Airfone ][. One of the questions that arises in the design of
the new system is, given the locations of the ground stations and their
busy-hour traffic forecast, where should switches that provide the
connection to the public-switches in order to minimize the overall cost
of the switches and the interconnect facilities.
To evaluate the impact of increasing the number of switches on the
cost of the interconnect facilities, this study considered five design
scenarios: 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 switches, with one switch always fixed at
Chicago. The study was carried out in two stages. In the first stage,
a mathematical model was used to determine the optimum locations for the
switches, assuming that the ground stations would be connected directly
to the switches (i.e., a star topology). Given a switch location and
the ground stations it will serve, the second stage determined a
minimun-cost topology to connect the ground stations to this swtich.
This topology allowed multiplexing and took advantage of the economies
of scale offered by the structure of the DS0 and DS1 tariffs and was
determined using a private network design tool, CAPT1N, developed at GTE
Laboratories during 1989 as part of Network Facilities Planning project.
The results of the second stage indicated the cost saving that result
from multiplexing for each cluster of switch and gorund stations to be
served by the switch. The results of this study can now be used to
evaluate the tradeoff between the cost of the swithces and the cost of
the interconnect facilities to determine the number of switches that
should be placed in the network. Figure below illustrates the network
topology with multiplexing for the four-switch scenario and the switch
at Chicago, transimiting to cells.

"Nazi Video Games Circulating"

LOS ANGELES ---- Undergound computer-video games circulating among
Austrain and German students test the ability to manage a Nazi death
camp and to distinguish between Aryans and Jews, a Holocaust study
center says.
Eight copies of the programs, designed for home computers, were
obtained by the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. The center
demonstrated two of the programs for The Associated Press on Monday.
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the center's associate dean, said the
programs are based on the Holocaust but often substitute Turks, many
of whom work in Germany, for Jews.
In one program, "KZ Manager", the player must sell gold fillings,
lampshades and labor to earn enough money to buy gas and add gas
chambers to kill Turks at the Treblinka death camp. "KZ" is an
abbreviation of the German word for con- centration camp.
The player must correctly answer questions about Turks or be taken
by a Grim Reaper figure to the Buchenwald death camp.
What yo uwant to do now if you love playing computer games, you
want to go right back in adn you want to win," Cooper said. "It's a
very shrewd psychology in terms of the design of the game"
Reports of the games have circulated for several years, but they
were not believed to be widespread until a recent surge of reports in
the Austrian media, he said.
Newspapers reported that a poll of students in one Austrian city
said that nearly 40 percent knew of the games and more than 20
percent had seen them, Cooper said.
The game "Aryan Test" says it is by Adolf Hitler Software Ltd. The
game "Anti-Turk Test" says it was made in Buchenwald by Hitler & Hess.
Distribution has been by electronic mail, under-the-counter sales, word
of mouth and in deceptive packaging on store shelves. Cooper said the
packaging of the "KZ Manager" game resembles "some sort of money game."
Cooper believes the games are the work of neo-Nazi propagandists (*** Yea
it's probably out own fucking gov't too ***) seeking youthful followers
through a technology largely unfamiliar to their parents.
"Not shocking to anybody, the kids are way ahead of the adults, and this
is one area where the Nazis, the fascists, have found a way in," he said.

"Nazi-Games Maker Target of Reward Offer"

LOS ANGELES --- The Simon Wiesenthal Center offerd a $25,00 reward
Friday in hopes of finding the maker of neo-Nazi video games that
have been circulating in Europe. It asked the German government to
match the sum.
"We believe that this would demonstrate a seriousness to finally
bringing these culprits to justice," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of
the Los Angeles-based Holocaust research center. The reward was
offered for information leading to a conviction.
The underground games, which are in German, have strong anti-Jewish
and anti-Turkish themes. In one program, KZ Manager, the player must
sell gold filings, lampshades and labor to earn money to buy gas and
gas chambers to kill Turks at the Treblinka death camp. "KZ" is an
abbreviation of the German word for concentration camp.
The reward was triggered by a telegram sent by German Chancellor
Helmut Kohl to Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, R-N.Y., on Thursday and
forwarded to the Wiesenthal Center.
D'Amato last week wrote to Kohl and Austrain President Kurt
Waldheim, asking them to prevent distribution of the games after the
center publicized their apparent spread in Germany, Austria, and the
Netherlands. D'Amota's letters cited provisions of the Austrain and
German criminal codes that forbid inciting racial hatred.
Word of the games has circulated for several years, but reports in
the Austrain media indicate they are becoming more widespread, said
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, the center's associate dean.
In a translated copy of the telegram, Kohl told D'Amato that he is
disgusted by the games but indicated that the problem has already
passed.
"As far as can be ascertained, these products have not appeard
since early 1990," Kohl said. "Before that, some of these evil items
had emerged, but they were not sold over the counter in normal
stores."
He said that the games were confiscated when found but that the
manufactuer has not been identified.

"'Cracker' Speaks Out"

New York--A man identifying himself as as one of the Dutch crackers
who was filmed breaking into U.S. computers by Dutch television said
last week he found the break-ins to be easy to do. He also said he
doesn't believe he did anything wrong. "A guest account is a guest
account. I considered myself a guest on the system," said a man who
identified himself only as "Hank." Last Wednesday, Hank, who said he
was 24 years old, gave a telephone interview to Emmanuel Goldstein,
editor of the cracker journal 2600. The interview aired on
Goldstein's radio program "Off the Hook," on WBAI-FM, a publicly
funded New York alternative radio station.
There was no conclusive evidence to indicate whether Hank was
genuine, though some details he gave matched those given out by
victims of the Dutch crackers and by people with contacts in the
cracker community. Hank spoke English with a slight accent.
He would not discuss specifics of sites broken into, how he got in
or what he found once he was there.
Hank said the cracking is its own reward, and when he's logged
into a system, he's interested only in the system itself, not the
data on it. One radio caller asked whether he'd ever gained access
to politicaly interesting information. "When i get onto a system,
I'm not interested in the stuff there," he said. "I'm not
interested in going throught love letters or anything else."
He said if he had access to classified information---something
authorities say he did not have--it's the user's fault. "I think
it's pretty stupid to put classified data on a public network," he
said.
Hank said he believes computer laws will not control cracking. "I
think it's not a solution to prohibit hacking, because the people
will go underground," he said.
Hank said he has been cracking about three years, and specializes
in breaking into Unix systems.
At first, he contacted systems administrators of systems he
cracked to alert them to problems. Some of them seemed to want to
use the information to correct the problem, but many seemed more
interested in hunting him down, he said. And those were the ones
most likely to leave security holes uncorrected, he added.
He said he searched for default log-ins that were shipped with
systems by the manufacturer, and often not changed by users.
Goldstein would not comment on how he got in touch with Hank. "I run
a hacking publication, and there's one in Holland," he said. He said
he believes Hank to be authentic. "Holland isn't that big a place.
Everybody knows what everybody else is doing.

Teleos Communicaitons, Inc., the leading manufacturer of PC-based terminal
adapters (PC TA) for ISDN connectivity, has purchased the technology of
Vadis, Inc. of Richardson, Texas. The agreement includes a complete
technology transfer of Vadis' Microchannel PC TA architecture. Teleos' own
PC TA product, the B101PC, is an IBM PC XT/AT-compatible adapter. The
acquistion will stregthen Teleos' leading market position and will enable
Teleos to broaden its offerings in the low end ofthe PC TA marketplace.

Teleos has appointed Internet its exclusive distributor in Hungary to

3. Note: The amount of time it will take to verify AMA recording depends on
the amount of traffic on the switch. If your office has light
traffic, you should continue with the steps in this manual and
return to Step 2 (above) 10 minutes until you are satisfied that
AMA is recording properly.
Compare the OP:AMA:STATUS output from Step 1 with the
OP:AMA:STATUS output from Step 2.
The amount of AMA recorded depends on the amount of traffic on the
switch.
To verify that AMA is writing to a segment, compare the percent
full (number records) of the segments from Steps 1 and 2. These
should increase with traffic on the switch.
When one segment fills, it should be written to disk and a new
segmentwill begin to fill. To verify that AMA has written to
disk, check the LAST TIME DISK WRITER WROTE TO DISK - this value
should not be 00:00 00/00.
You can also verify the AMA has been written to disk by comparing
the output of the OP:AMA:MAPS commands issued in Steps 1a and 2a.
The second line of the output from the OP:AMA:MAPS gives a number
after WRITE PARTITION. Below this are listed the various
partitions available. Locate that partition corresponding to the
write partition number. Within this report are values for LPO and
LPS. Thse values should increase when AMA is written to disk.
If AMA has successfully written to disk and is writing into a new
segment , AMA is recording properly. If AMA is recording
properly, proceed to the next section.
If AMA is being recorded in one SEGMENT, but has not written to
disk, proceed to the next section but continue to monitor AMA. To
continue the monitoring, reenter the OP:AMA:STATUS message evey 10
minutes until the AMA successfully writes to disk.

EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW:
This guideline provides standards for provisioning trunk capacity (analog
and digital) in the central office switch. This capacity consists of the
forecasted amounts of trunks which terminate on the swithc, sas well as
some quantity, method , to provide for unidentified, unforecasted
requirements. The intent is to ensure the trunk capacity for central
office switches is engineered to cover the core engineering time frame, in
such a manner as to meet the unexpected customer demand and/or deployment
of unforeseen pari gain devices by GTE.
The existing PCM process authorizes engineering for forecasted switch
terminations to accommodate the message trunk forecast, the special
services forecsat, and pair gain host/remote links (future). This
guideline provides instructions for the engineering of unforecasted
miscellaneous switch terminations with COE core job/projects.
GENERAL DISCUSSION:
Competition is pushing GTE to respond to the customer on a shorter time
interval. In order to accomplish this, they must position GTE to allow
for rapid Trunk service provisioning. The availability of central office
Trunk Terminations through controlled engineering for 5-10% unforeseen
demand will ensure their ability to succesfully respond to customer demands
in a timely manner. The time required from customer request to
determination of equipment required, ordering, installing, testing is not
acceptable and is a contributing factor to GTE's loss of customer base.
Proper provisioning of trunk circuits in the right exchanges is essential
to responding to customers' needs.
Agreements are imminent which will provide for planned future pair gain
devices on the PCM by Planning. Existing links for pair gain devices will
be in the POTS/TTE trunk forecast. Therefore, margin for these links are
not provided via this process guideline.
This guideline does not provide margin for the message circuit trunk
forecast trunks. The trunk forecasters will not build margin into the
groups which they manage by the TTE program. In other words, existing or
imminent processes provide for switch terminations to accommodate TTE
forecast and H/R links.
Planning has concurred with their proposal to provide 5-10% margin for
trunk terminations in electronic switches. The decision on the precise
amount of margin to be order should be made by the Traffic Engineer. This
decision will be based on familiarity with the specific wire center and
service demands which have been experienced over the past several years,
along with knowledge of the specific switch configuration. Switches in
remote, slow growth areas would obviously requirrreless margin than
switches in metropolitan, high growth areas. Tandem or class 4/5 switches
may require larger margins due to the unpredictability of IXC demand.
GUIDELINE INSTRUCTION:
The existing PCM process authorizes engineering for forecasted switch
terminations to accommodate the message trunk forecast, the special
services forecast, and pair gain host/remote links (future). This
guideline provides instructions for the engineering of unforecasted
miscellaneous switch terminations with COE core job/projects.
Every core job/project should provision to accommodate unforeseen demand
for central office trunk terminations in addition to the
forecasted/projected requirements of the engineering period. The
unforeseen demand for trunk terminations will typically be engineered at
5% margin for rural offices and 10% margin for metropolitan offices.
Traffic Engineering of more than 10% Trunk Terminations margin will
require Planning review/approval.
Services that comprise unforeseen demand are:
o DID (on COE Forecast as lump sum)
o WATS (when served on trunks)
o Switched HI CAPS/Switched Data (DTI resources) (This is to be
forecasted by Market Forecasting as part of the CAF/SAL forecast.)
o MISC. (analog and/or DTI)
The central office switch common equipment capacity must be engineered to
carry both forecasted and unforeseen demand traffic as if all trunks were
incarry both forecasted and unforeseen demand traffic as if all trunks
were in service by the end of the core period. Twenty-four CCS per trunk
should be used to properly provision the switch's capacity. Application
as two-way split fifty percent incoming and fifty percent outgoing is
recommended unless that traffic engineer knows of local considerations
which warrant a different application.
When the engineer has determined the margin for the unforeseen demand, two
important decisions need to be evaluated: A) exact trunk or T1 quantities,
and B) associated CCS loads.
A. Trunk quantities - The exact number of margin trunks to be added
should be based on the TOGEN calculation of
required trunking and associated frames. Both
analog and digital margin should be provided
(unless a digital switch as been provision with no
analog trunks for DID). Margin trunks should be
calculated to fill frames where possible, and
consideration should also be given to the TCU
layout of the office.
Note: In all cases, when digital technology is the switch type, the
analog trunk frames should be wired so card slots are available
when shortages occur. Digital trunk FIUs can hold two QSIC cards
each, which provides four T1 saaapc lines. Currently they have to
pay right-to-use fees whenever a DTFIU is installed. GTE is
working to implement TRU fees paid as QSIC cards are installed.
Once that is the case there will be value to not installing the
QSIC cards, leaving slots open until they are needed.
Example 1: Metropolitan GTD-5 office requires 200 T1 spans for
forecasted/known trunking requirements.
200 T1 = 25 DTFIU
20 T1 - Recommended margin at 10%
220 T1 = 27.5 DTFIU
Recommendation - Provide 224 T1s to completely fill 28 DTFIUs.
Analyze TCU/FIU layout to assess impact on
TCU requirements. The DTFIU may be eliminated
if it requires an additional TCU.
Note: It is understood this example is representative of a "typical"
metropoloitan office. Engineering judgement, based on specific
site characteristics, may require more than 10% to be budgeted and
installed (with proper approval by Palnning).
Example 2: Rural GTD-5 office requires 30 T1 spans for forecasted/known
trunking requirements.
30 T1 = 3.75 DTFIU
2 T1 - Recommended margin at 5%
32 T1 = 4.0 DTFIU
Recommendation - Analyze TCU/FIU layout. If the fifth DTFIU
can be built into existing TCU, then provide,
if the fifth DTFIU would require another TCU,
do not provide.
B. CCS loads - Once the trunk quantities have been determined, a margin
trunk group should be built into the trunk summary. A CCS load of 24
CCS/trunk should be associated with these margin trunks so that common
equipment wil be calculated to include these trunks (specific impact
will be on TPC processors, MF receivers, and registers in the GTD-5
technology).
If additional TCUs and/or Digital Trunk FIus are required in the GTD5, or
additional Switch Modules are requires in the 5ESS, or more than 10%
margin is required, then Planning must review and provide
authorization/funding.

Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) has been standardized as the target
transfer mode for B-ISDN. It is believed to be a highly flexible
switching and multiplexing technique capable of supporting a wide range
of broadband and narrowband services. Although the conceptual view of
ATM seems attractive, the feasibility of ATM in practice is uncertain for
real-time services such as full-motion video, especially under the
assumption that some degree of statistical multiplexing is desirable
within the ATM network. The objective of this project was to evaluate
the technical feasibility and complexity of ATM for the delivery of four
full-motion video services: television distribution, video-on-demand,
videoconferencing, and videotelephony. The intra-LATA transport of these
video services over and end-to-end ATM network with a standard B-ISDN/ATM
interface was investigated.
The approach was based on a top-down view of the scenario at three
levels: services, network, and switching. At the service level, the four
types of video services and their related end-toend network transport
requirements were characterized. The effects of cell losses and cell
delays on video quality were investigated. At the network level,
alternative service topologies were compared to find the preferred
topology for deployment of each service (see Figure 552-1). The network
management and control issues were examined and traffic control methods
were proposed. At the switch level, the performance and drawbacks of
proposed ATM switch architectures were evaluated for the purpose of
switching full-motion video (see Figure 552-2). Finally, the end-to-end
transport requirements were related to the curretn state of ATM
techonology to draw conclusions about the technical feasibility of each
video service.

in order to offer enhanced video services to a large
customer base.
Television Distribution - Among the four video services studied, TV
distribution services appear to be the most
feasible, but large-scale multicast ATM switches
will be required. A network architecture that
allows switching as close to the customer as
possible is desirable.
Videoconferencing - Network management and control issues are
complex; the design, development, and deployment
of network suitable for videoconferencing will
be a major technical challenge in order to
guarantee quality of service interms of cell
delay/jitter and loss rate.
Videotelephony - For ubiquitous service, the complexity of
network level problems (e.g., traffic control,
network management) will be significant. Large
ATM switches will be required.
Video-on-Demand - For true point-to-point VOD, a robust ATM
backbone with processing capability for
mid-calling signaling will be required. At
present, such a network is not feasible,
although B-ISDN should have this capability. An
area-wide offering is feasible using "local"
video gateways installed at either the access
nodes or in remote units.
Overall, it was concluded that ATM techonology is not yet ready for its
role as a unified means of transport for B-ISDN. Tha main obstacles lie
in the areas of network traffic control and the development of large-scale
switching systems. Without effective solutions to these problems, any
ubiquitous offernign of on-demand, full-motion video services on a public
ATM network is not feasible in the near future.

== Teleos: New Access Server Enhancements ==
Multi-Point Token Ring LAN Bridging provides a unique and cost-effective
solution for customers that need to link multiple LAN sites only on an
"as-needed" basis, with the speed (dynamic bandwidth) but without the
incovneience and expense of T1 leased lines. A Token Ring Interface United
(TRIU) provides a 4 Megabit-per-second, IBM Token Ring Network-compliant
interface which supports connections to the AS/400 and other IBM and non-IBM
hosts, front-end processors and communication controllers that support Token
Ring source routing.
The multi-point feature dynamically establishes bridged connections between
up to 32 remote locations. The bridged channel is transparent to higher
layer protocols on the private Token Ring Network. The IAP6000 Access
Server supports 56Kbps, 64 Kbps, 384 Kbps (H0) 1,472 Mbps (H10) and even n x
64 Kbps capability. For instance, a corporate user, for a given
application, can "bundle" 4 x 64 Kbps B channels yielding 256 Kbps of
bandwidth between locations. H0 channels can be concatenated in this
similar fashion. Up to 32 B cahnnel bridge connections may be established
dynamically, on a call-by-call basis, per single TRIU. A total of eight
TRIUs can be supported in a IAP6000 twenty-slot system.
Fractional T1 support using intergrated access allows the user to permanetly
assing channels in 64, 384 or 1,472 Kbps increments for heavy usage
applications. The user now has the option of defining that a certain amount
of bandwidth over a single, intergrated network connection be "fixed" (or
dedicated) for a particular application use. With private line services
over the same Primary Rate Interface access line. For instance, users can
create hybrid networks and use both switched and private line tariffs to
optimize their network costs.
Transparent autoconnect automatically sets up a switched digital call
providing, in effect, virtual dedicated badnwidth on demand for users who
cannot justify the costs of private lines. The IAP6000 Access Server can be
programmed through the system console to dial a specific remote location and
leave the connection active. In this mode, the call is monitored and if for
any reason the connection is dropped, the IAP6000 Access Server
automatically re-establishes the call.
Dynamic event steram reproting enables the IAP6000 Access Server to relay
network information it recieves from the public switched network to an
adjunct information processor (PC, mini, mainframe). The event steram link

the D channel, and reported, includes: Calling Party Number Information;
Called Party Number Infomration; Time and Date of the Call, and Call
Type (Voice,Data). Event stream reporting allows the IAP6000 Access Server
to share ISDN D-channel network intelligence with non-ISDN CPE so customized
applications such as call screening, call routing (dealer locator),
automatic call back (for abandoned or busy calls) and secure dial-back
services for comptuer access can be implemented.

/bin/mail is the local delivery agent for sendmail. In
some particular instance, /bin/mail parse its argument incorrectly
and therefore, mail are being drop into the bit bucket.
If there are users that has "f" has the second character, you might want

== GTD-5 SVR 1711 Features ==
CALL GAPPING FOR LOCAL CODES
Allows control of incoming trunk-to-line calls only, line-to-line calls
only, or control of both at different gap intervals - defined as control of
traffic categories.
The number of simultaneous code controls (destination and local) are
increased from 64 to 256.
Controls calls to terminating codes for the following:
o Any subscriber line
o Hunt group pilot number
o Attendant group listed directory number(s)
o 10-digit directory number in a subtending PBX
Gap intervals settable for: 0(no control), 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10 ,15, 30, 60,
120, 300, and 600 seconds. An infinite interval is also available.
DEFINE "VIA" ROUTES BY TRUNK GROUP NUMBER
Allows the Network Manager to engineer each site for associated traffic
types to route index in terms of route index pair relationships for reroute
controls. This provides the capability to specify the reroute as a "from"
TGN and a "to" (VIA) TGN without having to recall complex routing chains
and routing index information.
RATE INTERVALS FOR NSM CONTROLS
Provides the option of designating the amount of traffic controlled by rate
(time) interval for the following NSM route controls:
o Cancel-To
o Cancel-From
o Skip Route
o Spray Reroute
o Spray Immediate Reroute
o Selective Trunk Reservation
Selectable intervals for each traffic type: 1-60 seconds in 1 second
increments, 120, 300, and 600 seconds. An infinite interval is also
available as well as 2 calls per second for intervals less than 1 second.
SPRAY ROUTE CONTROLS
Reroute controls will be modified from the existing eight pairs of from/to
routes to eight sets of from/to routes. A set of from/to routes consists
of one traffic donor (from) route and up to seven out-of-chain "VIA" (to)
routes accessed with a spray hunt technique. The spray hunt technique
diveds the rerouted traffic evenly among the out-of-chain trunk groups
through a rotation scheme. The reroute control will permit the option to
define the traffic donor (from) and "VIA" (to) routes by trunk group
numbers.
SS7 BASED NON-ISDN VOICE MESSAGE WAITING INDICATION CONTROL
Extension of the SVR 1641 Voice messaging feature using a SS7 network
based, ANSI standard, messaging system. The GTD-5 will receive SS7
requests from a Voice Message Storage and Retrieval System (VMSR) to
activate or deactivate a Voice Waiting Indicator (MWI) for a subscriber.
The GTD-5 will update the subscriber's MWI and return a successful or
failure response via SS7 to VMSR.
This feature does not impact the existing in-band VMSR capabilities. An
individual GTD-5 site may have only in-band or only SS7 or both
capabilities. This feature provides the GTD-5 with capability to support
up to 127 different VMSR systems.
INTERNATIONAL STANDARD FOR 15 DIGITAL DIALING (CCITT E.164)
The GTD-5 can presently handle 15 dialed digits for digit translation
screening and call routing functions. GTE AMA record formats will be
modified to account for 15 digital international numbers as specified in
CCITT E.164 recommendations.
Bellcore LSSGR AMA specifications have not been issued for 15 digit
international records and will not be included in this SVR.
CALL WAITING/CALL FORWARDING BUSY INTEGRATION
Currently, Call Waiting overrides Call Forwarding Busy. Customer in focus
groups who have both Personal Secretary (VMSR) and Call Waiting have
requested the ability to have calls forwarded to their Call Waiting feature
while they are receiving a call. This feature enhancement will facilitate
the ability to see Call Waiting and Voice Mail services together.
This is a changed feature interaction. No new classmarks are involved. All
subscribers with both features active will get this new interaction.
For a terminating party disconnect with call waiting situation, the
terminator will be rung for custom calling as in current treatment. During
custom call rering, call forwarding will be attempted at the end of the
original call forwarding don't answer timeout.
CUSTOMER CONTROLLABLE RINGING INTERVAL FOR CALL FORWARD DON'T ANSWER
This feature allows the customer who subscribes to Call Forwarding Don't
Answer the ability to control the number of rings (1-9) before the call is
forwarded. The type of ringing provided for a call will not be affected by
this feature.
AUDIBLE MESSAGE WAITING INDICATION VIA PERIODIC RINGING BURSTS
With the exception of customers served by featurephones, Message Waiting
Indication is currently provided on via stutter dial tone. As an option
this feature would provide a double ring (0.5 seconds on, 0.5 seconds off,
0.5 seconds on) to indicate a waiting message. The first double ring would
occur within 5 minutes of receiving a message and would be repeated every
15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes as selected by a Recent Change command. The
customer controls this feature's activation/deactivation similar to Call
Forwarding Variable. This feature will not be given to a line with the Do
Not Disturb Feature activated.
ANONYMOUS CALLER REJECTION
This feature is a variation of the CLASS Selective Call Rejection feature.
CLASS Anonymous Caller Rejection prevents termination of anonymous calls
(Calling Number Delivery Blocked) to a CLASS customer's line by routing
these calls to a special announcement which informs the caller that they
may complete a call to this subscriber if they allow their calling number
to be delivered.
TERMINATING END OFFICE SCANNING ALLOWED (TR-TSY-000215 3.5.8)
This feature allows the GTD-5 to be compatible with TR-TSY-000215, Issue 1,
Sept. 88.
The parameter as defined in the referenced TR is used to control whether an
office will request termination scanning as the initial choice of
originating scanning for outgoing Automatic Callback/Automatic recall
(AC/AR) requests. The current GTD-5 design interprets this parameter to
apply to inbound terminating scanning AC/AR requests. With both parameters
defined in the GTD-5, GTE may enforce originating or terminating scanning
on outbound requests and also force other offices to use originating
scanning rather than terminating scanning.
AC/AR FEATURE TIME RANGES (TR-TSY-000215 AND 227)
This feature allows the GTD-5 to be compatible with the latest TR's.
The following timers will be modified:
o T1 Originating Scanning Rate = 10 - 120 seconds (60 seconds
recommended)
o T2 Wait Between Unanswered Special Ringing Attempts = 1-12 minutes
(4 minutes recommended-maximum number of unanswered
special rings is 15)
o T8 Resume Term Scanning to Same Line Timing = 17 (2 ringing cycles) -
60 seconds (35 seconds-5 ringing cycles is recommended)
o T10 Maximum Time Callback remains Queued = 3-4 hours
COT-IDENTIFICATION CALL WAITING INDICATION IN PRINTOUT
This is an enhancement to the Customer Originated Trace feature to provide
a printout that will indicate that the last answered call was a Call
Waiting call.
SCREEN LIST EDITING CHANGES
This is an enhancement to allow the following CLASS Screen List Editing
options:
o Allow code for deleting all entries
o Allow code for deleting all private entries
o Allow last answered number to be added to any screening list
o New treatment of entry with private mark when entered as public
AC/AR REQUESTS TO HGRP PILOT NUMBERS
This allows the GTD-5 to be compatible with the appropriate TR's by queuing
calls placed via AC/AR if all members of a hunt group are busy and
immediately completing AC/AR calls if any member is idle.
AC/AR INTERACTION WITH CALL WAITING
The GTD-5 currently will queue an AC/AR request to a line with call waiting
when the line is busy with one call. This feature will not queue the call
but go to immediate processing and the terminating line will receive a call
waiting tone.
914E WILTRON CABLE ANALYZER SHARING
Siemens Transmission Systems has developed a feature on the 914E MXU which
allows sharing of one Wiltron Cable Analyzer (MCA) among up to 5 MXU units
in the same cabinet. the GTD-5 MXU software will be modified to allow up
to 16 i14E MXU's to share the same MCA. The MCA cannot be shared between
Direct Interfaced MXU's and COT Interfaced MXU's.
PERFORM SHORT % WAIT(S) WITHOUT ALLOCATING A BUFFER
Timeout buffers will no longer be used for short waits, under 5 slices/50
milliseconds. This will save real time and reduce buffer pool
fragmentation caused by short waits.
SPEED UP BUFFER ALLOCATION SEARCH LOOP
With the removal of sequence buffers from the buffer pool, buffer pool
fragmentation has become less of a problem. Now with less fragmentation,
processor real time in the APC will be saved by adopting a buffer
allocation method similar to non-APC processors, which reduces time spent
in the allocation search loop. In addition, real time will also be saved
during buffer de-allocation by releasing multiple buffers at one time using
a new "flush buffers" function.
OUTGOING TRUNKS CALL CUTOFF ENHANCEMENT
On a line-to-trunk call, there are occasions where a "hangup" from the
outgoing trunk is caused by a network problem. This feature provides a SMA
printout for the Telco to identify the specific trunk group, trunk, carrier
ID, calling and called numbers as well as the calculated interval of cutoff
elapsed time.
This feature only applies to calls where called party hangup does not
release the call (e.g. called party timed released.
MEASUREMENT CALLING/BILLING NUMBER DELIVERS TO CUSTOMER LINE
This feature modifies GTD-5 implementation to be compliant with LSSGR AMA
format (TR-TSY-000031, Issue 3, Jan. 90) for usage sensitive billing and
AMA format for the calling number delivery (CAD) feature.
This feature is applicable to any line (directory number) assigned the
Calling Number Delivery or Calling Number Display features. Billing will no
longer be based on activation/deactivation of these features.
A Usage-Sensitive CAD is assigned to a DN via a service order. The count of
DNs delivered will not be applicable for intragroup calls. Up to 65,000
lines can be assigned usage-sensitive CAD. Each DN assigned the
Usage-Sensitive CAD feature will have two AMA counts with a maximum value
of each counter of 32,767:
o Count of DNs delivered
o Count of private and out-of-area indicators delivered
An AMA record will be generated once every 24 hours of each DN with
non-zero counts. An AMA record will be generated immediately if a
particular counter reaches 32,000. If all counters are zero, or no lines
in the CO have the feature assigned, a single record is produced to
indicate the task executed correctly.
FLIP CMD ON RSNW DOES NOT WORK
This feature extends the Base Unit capability of a "simplex-to-simplex
switch", the ability to change from a simplex 0 configuration to a simplex
1 configuration (or vice versa) without an intervening duplex stage, to a
Remote Unit Network.
This capability is useful during retrofit intervals and repair of faults
where the system was not able to correctly isolate the faulty copy.
MXU OUTAGE TIME REDUCTION
This feature reduces the software loading time for multiple MXU processors
loads. A broadcast mechanism will be used to transport fewer messages
between the APC and the outermost superordinate processor (TCU or RSU).
This feature will be transparent to the craftsperson and is estimated to
result in 4% reduction in APC real time per MXU.

With the move to higher speed networks, many fundamental issues in control
and design of networks need to be examined afresh. This project has
attempted to address critical architectural issues to ensure that all aspects
of these emerging high-speed technologies reflect the needs of GTE's future
high-bandwidth services.
The feasibility of transporting motion video over an ATM (asynchronous
transfer mode) network was investigated for Telops, with a major report
provided (jointly with Project 552) on the feasibility of end-to-end ATM for
a number of video services. Through experiments, it was demonstrated that
performance improves when the cell transmissions from each video source are
smoothed at least on a per frame basis; this removes constraints on the
synchronization of the frames across video sequences sharing the same network
resources. It was shown that for uncorrelated sources, a network utilization
of 0.8 is achievable with minimal cell loss (0.5 for correlated sources). For
congestion control at the call level, a histogram-based traffic descriptor
and call admission policy was proposed.
Technical assessments were carried out for Telops on the technical
feasibility and complexity of providing (1) remote LAN interconnection
service using the Metropolitan Area Network standard, DQDB, and DQDB-based
SMDS (Switched Multimegabit Data Service), and (2) interactive video
communication services over a DQDB network. The first study found that
whereas SMDS exploits many advantages of DQDB, the lack of reconfiguration
capability of the Open Bus access DQDB is a serious concern; it was proposed
that where reliability is critical, the Looped Bus topology be provided as an
option. the second study concluded that since neither of the non-Isochronous
service capabilities supports bandwidth reservation, it is necessary to
employ the Isochronous service capability -- which provides circuit-like
transport -- to guarantee quality of service for all real-time video
services.
This project also contributed to the ACORN project on lightwave networks at
Columbia University. ACORN has industry-wide participation and is
investigating fully optical networks: stations have tunable transmitters and
receivers, and are connected by a passive optical medium. A fundamental
problem associated with connection establishment on a packet by packet basis
was investigated in collaboration with staff at Columbia University and BNR.
A new hybrid time division multiplexing scheme was proposed and analyzed.
As part of system design of the advanced intelligent network (AIN) testbed, a
number of performance/architectural studies were carried out. In particular,
the performance impact of introducing AIN service on the GTD-5 and the PAP (a
pre-adjunct-processor in the AIN testbed) was analyzed, using a network of
queues model. Preliminary results indicate that for 20% AIN penetration,
system performance is only marginally affected, and an effective bandwidth of
1 to 2 Mb/s is sufficient for the switch-adjunct interface.

The objective of this project was to develop tools applicable to
understanding and assessing the reliability of elements of telecommunications
systems. Research problems in statistical inference and reliability modeling
related to the nature of data obtainable from specific activities or systems
used in telephone operations were addressed.
Software previously delivered to Telephone Operations for monitoring the
speed of answer objective in customer contact offices was enhanced. It
execute statistical tests to determine whether performance is as expected
after each 15-minute period and to identify some possible causes for poor
performance. The enhanced version completed execution for large numbers of
incoming calls in 15 min. Additionally, in support of force management, it
was determined that the software currently used in other customer contact
offices to generate capacity tables contains some errors. The project team
delivered the rewritten software, but did not test to determine whether the
model is valid. Simulation studies indicated that there are significant
differences in the number of service representatives required when the
model's service time distribution is invalid. Techniques were outlined for
analyzing data provided by the Rockwell-Collins Agent Information Reports to
make inferences regarding customers' speed of answer tolerance.
Evaluation of AT&T's bill verification system was completed. A sampling
scheme, statistical analyses, and graphics are used by AT&T to verify access
billing by the LECs. The system was reviewed, and formulae were derived and
verified. the system was found to use statistically correct methodology and
to be objective, favoring neither AT&T nor GTE. The critique of AT&T's
methodology gave GTE managers in Pricing Policy and IXC Services and
understanding of the technical details and the information necessary to
negotiate with AT&T effectively.
A proposal was made to replace the use of trouble per hundred lines by an
estimate of service availability for assessing the quality of telephone
service.
Collaborating with scientists in the Components Technology Laboratory, the
project staff prepared a paper that details the lack of mathematical and
statistical rigor in the existing laser diode reliability literature and
discusses statistical properties and some aspects of reliability modeling
pertinent to laser diodes.
Templates to be used by all users of the Software through Pictures to print
out details of the Process Integration and Automation information model were
made, and a program to construct the tree structure of inheritance
relationships in the database was written.
In the more basic statistics research activities, a paper on functions of
arrangement-increasing partial ordering was submitted for publication, and a
book on parameter estimation in reliability and life span models was
reviewed. Papers on Laplace ordering and its reliability applications and on
a piecewise exponential estimator for the survivor function were accepted for
publication.

== Computer Woes Wrack Phones in East, California ==

WASHINGTON -- Service disruptions blamed on computer software plagued
millions of telephones in the nation's capital and three nearby states
Wednesday, and much of California had similar problems.
Private homes and business bore the brunt of the disruptions in Washington.
Bell Atlantic said 6.7 million phone lines in Washington, Maryland, Virginia
and parts of West Virginia were hit with disruptions. Most service was
restored by Wednesday evening.
A software glitch disrupted Pacific Bell service in the Los Angeles area at
midday Wednesday, interfering with phone calls in much of the 213, 818, 714,
and 805 area codes. Most service was restored by midafternoon.

LONDON -- Marijuana may help people see in the dark, according to a letter
in the scientific journal Nature.
"Jamaican fishermen, it seems, have an uncanny ability to see in the dark,
and cannabis is the magic ingredient," said M.E. West of the University of the
West Indies.
Most Jamaican fishermen smoke marijuana or drink an alcoholic beverage made
from the stems and leaves of the plant, he said.
West said he began conducting research after joining a nighttime fishing
expedition. He was amazed at how the crew navigated without lights because he
could see nothing.

== Caller ID Bills Gain Ground ==

Bills mandating per-call blocking for caller ID are advancing rapidly
through both houses of Congress. Thursday, the caller ID bills were studied
and changed--or "marked-up" in legislative parlance--by Senate and House
subcommittees. The next step will be further mark-ups by the parent
committees before the bills are sent to the full houses for votes.
Both bills would require all local exchange carriers to offer free per-call
blocking. But the House bill would apply blocking to names and address.
Congressional staffers say both bills are expected to be modified further in
the parent committees and possibly on the floors of both congressional bodies
before final passage.

American Telephone & Telegraph has asked federal regulators for permission
to test a system of "personal" mobile phone that could be used at home and on
the street, and relieve crowding on the cellular and regular mobile radio
frequencies. If the Federal Communications Commission allowed the test, AT&T
said it would spend three years developing the system, which would allow
customers to use the same phone and number wherever they went within a
metropolitan area. AT&T is in the "very early stages" of developing the
system.

Job Expenditure Tracking System (JETS) is a new engineering project
management system that will become USWC's official capital management tool in
July.
JETS replaces certain job authorization processes in DOPAC, as well as the
budgeting functions of the Construction Activity Management Information System
(CAMIS) and joins several interelated accounting and capital spending
functions.
JETS is designed to work for its users, bringing faster, more efficient
tracking of annual budgets, expenditures and administrative information for
capital budget management, while it tracks capital and related maintenance
dollars and dates for all classes of plant equipment. JETS will accomplish
this while allowing its users to track forecasted, authorized and actual
capital dollars by job -- all within a single system.
As an important market unit resource, JETS will allow more complete tracking
of expenditures related to products and services. System users will have
direct responsibility, following conversion to JETS, for the construction
expenditure portion of the corporate books, rather than Accounting or other
supported personnel. JETS also moves several other functions currently done
in Accounting back to the users.

== Pay-Phone Competitors say USWest is Unfair ==

USWest Communications treats pay-phone competitors unfairly, an association
of pay-phone businesses charges in complaint filed Wednesday with state and
federal regulators.
The Arizona Payphone Association, a group of 30 companies, complained to the
state Corporation Commission and the Federal Communications Commission.
USWest competes with other companies to install pay telephones at business
locations where the phones are used.
The association accuses USWest of unfair competition by charging excessive
fees for access to the local phone network that USWest controls, and by
offering its own pay-phone service at cut-rate prices.
USWest has about 20,000 pay phones in Arizona and competitors have about
4,000, the association says.
"We are fed up with USWest using its monopoly... to create an unfair
competitive advantage," association President Patrick Kerivan said.
USWest Communications spokesman Tony Seese-Bieda said that the company's
practices are not unfair, and that rates for its pay phones and rates for
services to other pay-phone companies have been reviewed and approved by
regulators.

== PAC Bell First BOC to Offer PRI ==

Pacific Bell has announced a new PRI-based ISDN service, and is the first
Bell operating company to do so. The company is calling the new service PRI
IS (Integrated Systems) and provides it in two basic flavors: 23B+D and 24B.
The service includes an array of standard and optional features. Standard
features include unlimited intracustomer caller telephone number delivery and
percall service selection. Options include B-channel packet switching and
private-facility connection. Initially, the service will debut in two cities,
San Francisco and Los Angeles, with other service "according to demand. PAC
Bell says it expects the greatest demand for the new service to services as
WATS, 800, foreign, exchange, and private lines, or that want to use it as a
means of interconnecting local area network. Prices for both the 23B+D and
24B packages are $1500 for installation and $545 per month.
