====================
ISSUE #001
Welcome the first issue of "The Lawless Society". Let me start this off
by telling you that this issue will be of nothing in particular. I will
mearly try to illustrate what will come (hopefully) in the issues to come.
Basically we hope to make this "newsletter" completely and relentlessly
revolutionary. This thing will hopefully turn out to be a guide to new
hackers who will eventually get a hold of this. But more importantly it will
be a method of warning and spreading new tips to the already experienced
hacker. Contributions from anyone wishing to contribute are greatly
encouraged but this doesn't mean we're going to take everything that is
written for this letter.
We also will not be limited to world of computers....But will be focused
more on using the computer as a tool (and a powerful one at that) to help
accomplish the end task of a revolution....If not in the government at least
in the way the government looks at today's generations and our ways of life.
They have come up with more and more ways to try and stop the computer hacker
from doing what he does but a 13 year old computer geek can still get into the
pentagon computers. This in itself proves that our government is nothing more
than a false sham of misconceptions and lies. If a kid can break into a
computer that houses the utmost secrets of our government and jeopardize our
nation's security then who among us is safe from anything? Thus....A new age
begins...Has already begun...to unfold. If we as a group or as an individual
have the power to change things in such a drastic way then why the hell
shouldn't we? The guy with the best Virus wins, eh?
The laws of the constitution are nice but in the end most of them are far
outdated. Jesus...the last amendment made was at least 25 years ago. Today's
culture demands for change. The drugs have brought themselves out and will be
here until man is dead. A government which outlaws some and keeps others
legal is only helping to keep the organized crime of the nation flourishing.
By legalization of all drugs the government would get rid of the wealth of
money that is to be made by trafficking it illegally. This in turn would stop
the mindless killings which would serve to take the thrill out of it and thus
almost eliminate the "drug war". Gangs would not be killing each other in the
street for something that anyone can go and buy at the corner "drug store".
We have in our hands the power to do far more than we are doing! For
everyone of the idiots that will read this and have no understanding of the
real world of the hacker there are still more who do know how to get into the
government systems and such. The key us unity! Strength in numbers. The
difference we hope to make here is in the hacking or cracking group itself.
What he have now is everything we need yet it is what keeps us from
succeeding. We have several nationwide groups that do nothing but try to
outdo each other. What we need to do is get together and try to outdo the one
force that has always won....the government that we created! Sure....There
have been plenty of articles written on even more people who have broken into
top secret files but where has it gotten us? Sure we've managed to crack the
shell, but they have always repaired those little holes and thrown us into
jail to boot. We need to get together and create a huge gaping hole that they
can not patch. We need to infiltrate them from within...Not sit here on the
outside and see who can get busted for the biggest crimes against the damn
phone company. This is the time for TRUE revolution! The government is
constantly and ever more speedily coming up with new ways to enclose us.
It's time to break out and throw it back in their fucking faces.
We can not allow them to hold us back any farther! How can they tell us
that our theft is wrong when that is in fact what this country came from?
This country was stolen! And now....It is time to once again steal to get it
back to where it was...In the hands of the people! For 2 centuries we have
relied on voting and asking them to do what we want in order to get our way.
That's BULLSHIT! We now have the power to TAKE it all back and that's exactly
what we're going to do!
I would now like to bring to your attention an idea conceived of by a
friend.
The Hacker's Trust Fund
=======================
This idea consists of simply setting up a fund for your fellow hackers. It
is suggested that each of the groups, large, small, and too small too
see...across the country set up donations of about $100 and keep this money
safely hidden away. The money will be stored and used if/when (hopefully
never) a member of your group gets busted for something. (Hopefully you'll get
nailed for something far less than what you were REALLY doing.) The money
should be used to buy this person.....who will undoubtedly have his hardware
tied up for months by the feds...a new (but basic) system. Doesn't have to be
anything special...Just enough to keep all the gears in the engine running.
Basically that should get you familiar with what it is that we want to
accomplish. Again...any participation from you in this letter is encouraged.
For right now just upload anything you got that would help the cause to The
Syndicate at 908-506-6651 12/24/96/38.4 USR
This may look like bullshit now....but what did they say to colombus?

The Lawless Society
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
ISSUE #02
Well here's the second in a hopefully long line of issues from The Lawless
Society. This issue will not be as much about computer hacking as it will be
about scams in general.
I guess we may as well start out with the basics like ATM's and Credit
Cards.
ATM's
=====
There are quite a few different ideas as to how one can get money out of an
ATM. I'm basically going to combine a few of the better methods that I've
seen and hopefully add a little to it. I think it's safe to assume that none
of us are going to go out and outright steal an ATM and take it home.
(Although this has been done! One was stolen out of a mall in NY. As far as
I know they guy was not caught and made of with 10's of thousands.)
Anyway...garbage can be the key to many problems. Some of the banks still
seem to be numb to the threat that is presented to them by the use of these
ATM machines. Receipts found in the trash or on the ground around some
machines will contain the account holders name. Since you're probably doing
this in your local area you can look up that name in the phone book and call
the bank telling them you just moved or something and lost your card and would
like a new one. Tell them the account holders address as if it was your "old"
address and tell them you would like a new card sent to the address of your
choice. (Please be smart enough not to send it to your own house) They will
even ask you if you want a new PIN number so there is no problem with that.
Another way of getting names and addresses is to look in the dumpsters that
are usually outside the banks. Some banks still do not shred everything they
throw out and you sometimes get a social security number too which helps
things a bit since you can tell them that number over the phone to make things
a little more believable. Now...instead of just going and taking this poor
saps money be a little creative. Most banks now have what is call immediate
withdrawal or "FlashCash". What this means is that you can put in a check
and immediately withdraw the amount of the check from the machine without any
wait. So....What you do is go down and do a balance inquiry just to make sure
the card works and then go through the procedure of making a deposit. When it
asks you to put in your deposit envelope simply slip in an envelope with a
suitable note in it. I'll leave the contents of the note up to you.
Now...Most towns have ATM's all over town. If the bank the account is at has
a true "MAC" machine you can make deposits from any other MAC machine. So
you can run all over town making fake deposits and taking out hundreds of
dollars. All machines have some sort of limit on them as to how much money
can be taken out at one time. The lowest I've seen is $300 and some go up to
$2000. I'd say to keep the withdrawals somewhere between $300-$500 just to
make sure the machine doesn't take a fit and keep the card.
Also...If you read any of the national tabloids most have ads for fake I.D.'s
as well as Social Security cards and birth certificates. Order yourself a few
of them and set up fake accounts and then you can go do the withdrawal trick.
Again...Don't send the damn ATM cards to your real address! You may also want
to wear a wig or something when you go in to set up the account just to be
sure they can't identify you. And park a little bit of a walk from the bank
so no one can recall your car. I drive a 66 mustang which is easily
remembered...If you drive a memorable car I advise parking down the street or
getting a friend to drive you.
Another thing that I have never seen posted anywhere is this. We are in the
middle of a recession. Banks are closing and bigger banks are taking over.
When one bank takes over another they will usually assign all customers new
ATM cards. If a bank (particularly yours) is changing over then watch in the
mail for a new ATM card. If you get one then you can bet that a few of your
neighbors also got one. A new PIN number is always enclosed with these new
cards so you can literally get access to 10-15 accounts just by looking in a
few mail boxes. And since the guy you stole from didn't get his new card he
will have no idea that he should have gotten one and he won't know anything is
wrong until his monthly statement comes. So you can go in and take like 20-30
bucks a night or do as before and throw in a few empty envelopes and grab $400
a shot. One more thing....In case you didn't know....Most ATM's have cameras
built into them behind some sort of dark glass. Some are out in the open but
some are hidden. So put a bag or a mask over your face when you go to the
machine just to be sure they can't identify you. It might also be a good idea
to not park your car directly in front of the ATM as an added precaution.
Most of the cameras aren't to clear but just to be safe we don't want them
getting your plate number of something.
Credit Cards
============
Credit Card numbers can be obtained through mear common sense so I'm not going
to do too much explaining on these. Anyone who works in a retail store has
access to literally 100's of credit card numbers every week. Simple write
down the number and name off the receipts that the store keeps and your set.
If your store calls voice to validate cards just call and tell them you want
an authorization number for a purchase. Give them the store's merchant number
and then make up a price. (Give a price somewhere in the range your planning
to spend) It's easier than breaking into TRW to find the balance and they
can't arrest you for doing it. Of course if you do try anything with the
cards be sure to call the Home Shopping Network. You can sell they're jewelry
to the local pawn shop for some bucks. HSC tends to check the address you
give them with the address that is given to C.C. company by the card holder so
tell them that you just moved and didn't notify your bank yet just in case
they get some sort of error when checking it. They'll usually buy that story.
Also....if you have an ex-girl/boyfriend get a card and send them flowers or
something. When the illegal charge is discovered the florist and the bank
will bug that person to try and find out who sent them the flowers. It makes
for a nice annoyance. I've done this before and it worked perfectly. I even
managed to get an Ex-Boss in trouble by placing the order from a telephone in
a Gas Station where I used to work. They threatened to take away his card
acceptance privileges since the card number came from his establishment. (I
gave them his number to call back and verify the order...They called back
about 5 minutes later and I told them "Yes...I made the order".....They said
ok and the next day the girl got the flowers. The next week she had people
bugging her and my boss had feds breathing down his neck for credit card
fraud. It was a nice feeling.
Colombia House
==============
Yes Columbia House. The music company. If you haven't figured this one out
yet then you have absolutely no imagination and probably shouldn't be reading
this because your as good as nailed. Columbia House is the company that you
see all the "12 tapes for a penny" ads for. They do not ship UPS. This means
you don't have to be there to sign for a delivery when the tapes come. So for
a penny and postage you can make up a name and have the tapes sent to any
address where you can go pick them up. They ship both tapes and CD's so you
can get a rather nice collection. This type of scam works great if you live
year round in a shore area where most residents are summer only. With
everyone out of town for the winter you can send shit all over the place and
go pick it up without fear of someone else getting it before you do.
Ok....Now let's just get into a little fun and games to round off this issue.
Mild Explosive
==============
Get yourself some chlorine and a bottle of brake fluid. Make a small pile of
chlorine (about 3 inches around) on the ground an pour some brake fluid on it.
In a few seconds you'll get some very noxious gas and a little smoke. A few
seconds later it will explode with about a 3 foot ball of flames. It will
then burn for a few seconds and produce some more very irritating gas.
If contained this mixture can do some damage. I've seen garbage cans blown
apart by it. I suppose you could work out some nice little bombs with a
glass bottle. Don't get in the way of the gas that is given off by this
stuff. The fumes are very poisonous and will have you coughing and wheezing
in seconds.
Smoke Screen
============
Ever wanna play spy hunter in real life? Welp...Get some rubber tubing and
run it from the engine compartment of your car to the back bumper. Hook up a
small electric pump to the battery and put a container full of oil under the
hood and put the hose into it. Rig it so that the pump will pull the oil out
of the container through the hose. Have the hose run very close to...but not
touching...your exhaust manifold. The oil in the house will start to burn and
by the time you get it out the other end (at you bumper) you'll have a thick
blue smoke that will blind traffic behind you and definitely cause a little
nausea.
Pain Causer
===========
If you happen to know any hippies or whoever that still have those strings of
beads hanging across a doorway in their house then try tying a few fish hooks
into the beads. This always makes for a good time at parties.
Hmm....I guess that about wraps things up for now since it's 6:00am and I've
been up all night and I'm extremely bored. For the newest TLS files as well
as the older ones give a call to The Syndicate.

Issue #3
As you can probably see,(if you are concious at all)
the times of blind following, and faithful trust, are now
over. We cannot, sit and let others, who were blindly elected,
or appointed, run our lives, and tell us what is right &
wrong, legal or illegal. How can we make sure, our lives are
following the right path or not? How can we be sure the
elected officials, have the good of the people in mind? Or,
for that matter, how can we assure ourselves, that our own
neibhors, are not plotting against us?
As OUR government does, I believe in a strong
system of "checks and balances". The only way to assure our
peace, and longevity, is to do what the government does.
SPY!
Our government seams to think it is acceptable for
them to check on themselves, or other civilian partys (let
alone, other governments). Although it is illegal for a
private civilian organization to "check up" on the government.
By no means, is this a message of forced rebellion,
or induced anarchy. I like to think of it as a slow
revolution. The ultimate goal is to make our world a better
place. One way of doing so, is through knowledge.
Our age presents us a virtual unlimited amount of
resources. Technology, has gotten to big to stay private. My
goal is to make it public. Electronic intelegence (computers)
in league with the government, has on many accounts been
infiltrated, and in many occasions, has proved a fruitful way
of maintaining the civilian/government checks and balances.
But in this day, it is much harder to do, and easier to get
caught. Why get caught, if you don't have to?
Many things, througout your home, are usefull to
our goal. For instance, with an inexpensive, radio control
unit, you can do many things, and not get caught (if you are
not stupid). For instance, bomb detonators, camera survellance,
And with the help of a few other items, bugging devices,
private alarm systems (from your home, to a desk drawer).
If the parts cannot be found in your home, they can be
purchased from an electronic store, for a small amount of
money (usually under $20.)
Chemical Explosives
Some good chamical explosives and incidiaries are as
Following...
Powdered Bleach, and Brake Fluid. Although this does not
pertain to electronics, it is a cheap, and easy way to start
a quick, large fire. Since these two ingredients are easy to
conceal, the chances of getting caught are slim.
Put the powdered bleach in a pile, next to, or on
whatever you want to light up. Pour about the same amount of
brake fluid on the bleack (enough to cover bleach pile).
A few seconds after mixing, you should notice some
bubbling or fizzing. At this point, stand back...the mixture
will give off a potent toxic chlorine gas. Depending on the
quality an amount of materials used, the fizzing will continue
for another 30 seconds to 2 minutes. The final result will be a
large colum of flame. Using a 3 inch pile of chlorine, I
obtained a 3 foot colum of fire.
Gasoline. Gasoline is a good, common and cheap explosive AND
incindiary. Its an incindiary, unless contained or compressed.
A VERY convienient way to ignite gasoline is with a "Solar
Flare" (rocket engine igniter). All you need is an igniter, 2
double a batteries, and some wires. You can obtain an igniter
from any hobby store. As far as I know, you do not need a
license to buy them. Remember, gasoline does evaporate rather
quickley. Best uses are as follows...
Fill up a mayonaise jar with gas. Attach the two AA
batteries (in series... +battery1- +battery2- ). Put the solar
flare on the rim of the jar, with the sulfer end inside the jar
and screw the lid on. Now you have 2 metal wires hanging out of
the mayonaise jar. Run a wire from the positive terminal on
battery #1, to one of the wires hanging out of the mayo jar.
Run another wire from the negative terminal on battery #2, to
a switch, or tripwire*(covered later). Run another wire from
the switch (or tripwire) to the other wire hanging out of the
jar. DO NOT submerge the igniter in gasoline, because gasoline
does not burn, only the fumes.
Make sure you are not near the jar when igniting.
A large explosion will immediately follow. (if you couldnt
guess).

Black Powder. One of my personal favorites. Black powder can be
picked up at any gun store, and some sports stores with hunting
sections. It requires no license, or identification. It packs
a punch, with just a little amount. You can use it in many ways
For some examples, try drilling a large hole on the top of a
cars headlight. Fill the light with black powder. Garunteed to
total the car. Or fill up a container, and bury an igniter in
the powder. Use a similar ignition device like above.
Black powder is rather cheap, and 1 pound can blow
a wall out if used properly.
IGNITION SWITCHES
Solar flares were discussed earlier, so I wont dwell
on it. To make some nice simple switches, all you you need is
some simple household things. Like a clothespin (hinged type)
and some tin foil.
Tripwires...Open the clothespin. Wrap one end of the
clothespin (the end that clips to the clothes themselves) with
tinfoil. Do the same to the other side of the clothespin (the
other side attached to the clothes). Nail one of the flat sides
of the clothespin, to a tree or something similar. Open the
clothespin, and clamp it on a twig or popcical stick. Tie a
string from a tree to the twig in the clothespin. Keep it close
to the ground (bout 3 or 4 inches off the ground). In effect,
when the "PREY" walks across the string, the string pulls the
twig out of the clothespin, which makes the clothespin close,
and the two pieces of foil touch, and WHallaH!.
If you attach some wire from each piece of tinfoil, you have a
great tripwire.

Issue #4
Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #4.
Any upcoming or experienced hacker knows that there comes a time when a
telephone and a PC will no longer suffice. There are certain tools of the
trade that start out as a bit of fun and experimentation but soon become
necessity. The following is a list of companies that sell items which will
help greatly in your quest. Some of the items are common but not readily
available and others are just plain hard to find and even thought of as
illegal even though they are not. Some companies sell complete items, some
sell kits, some sell plans, and some sell all three. We will provide you with
a listing of the company's name, what they sell, their address, and the phone
number and price of a catalog if available.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If one wants cable for free, one has two options. You can either rig your
cable box and risk detection and possible prosecution or you can buy a cable
descrambler from another company. Aftermarket descramblers ARE legal in most
states. The crime is tampering with a box that is owned by the cable company.
If you own your own box they can say NOTHING! You only have to pay them for
the feed which is usually under $5 per month.(Depending on your cable company)
If you are going to order a descrambler, you must get the same brand that
your cable company uses. Most of the companies that follow, supply from 5 to
10 different brands, so you should have no problem in locating one that will
work. All boxes offered from the companies listed in this text file are
gauranteed to be "bullet" proof.

Most of these companies will not sell to anyone in the same state in which
they operate. I don't know exactly why. I guess it's illegal or something.
But, pick one that's not in your state and give them a call. You should have
no trouble at all. Prices range from $45 to about $199 depending on which box
you need and who you buy from. So shop around a bit. And of course, if you

====================
ISSUE #005
-FEDWatch '92-
It happens every year. Who starts it is unimportant. But the damage it does
(or does not do) is amazing.I remember the first time I heard the rumor, back
in 90...the FEDS are investigating all the local BBS's!
The BBS world is a strange community.Strange,in that, unlike other groups of
human beings,almost nobody "knows" anyone else.As a user of 3 years,I have
seen countless other users come and go,without ever so much as talking to them.
As a sysop, its even worse. If you run a board of any repute whatsoever, asking
for any real info on your users is a major faux pas. So aside from having seen
them someplace else, you are totally in the dark about who is who on the boards.
This can make it fun to be a user, but tough to be a sysop, sometimes. Quite
literally, the cops can be anyone. ANY and ALL new users are suspects. Some
sysops combat this by insisting on voice validating each and every user.
This practice,in my experiance, drives away the users you'd most want to have.
Other sysops use a waiting period,or watch to see what other sysops do with
regards to your access. Over the years,I have done all & none of the above.
But the rumors, thats the crux of this file. Rumors are wonderous things. They
can make or break reputations, lives, and careers. Panther Modernz (my previous
textfile/hacking/etc. group) died because a whole bunch of people of whom we'd
never heard of went around claiming to be in our group, and rumors grew out of
the fact that because these people had no lives, that we must be similarly lame.
Phoenix Modernz (which consists of myself and two others who have been in comas
for the last 10 months) will never suffer a similar fate.
But the rumors....I remember November of 89,when I first got hit with the
FedWatch rumor. I bought into it,took down my BBS,got rid of a few items
I was "holding" for a friend, and generally became unobtrusive. And I waited.
And waited. And waited some more. Finally,I put my board back up (after
changing its name & number) and went "underground". A few of my friends did so
as well. Some put their boards back up eventually, some didn't. But the rumor
did preciesely what I'm sure it was intended to do...it knocked everyone with
something to hide into hiding. Probably revealing them for who they were.
This years rumor mill worked much the same. When I got busted,I am told that
all sorts of wild rumors were started to the effect that I was in jail, or
worse. But this years rumors turned REAL interesting in ways even I was
unaccustomed to...
We'll start with what was,to my mind, the best coverup of the year for 1991.
Understand that the user which I am about to describe is your prime rich-boy
adolescent. His daddy has bought him everything he has ever owned, and if he
should ever get into trouble, can afford lawyers enough to handle it.We'll call
this user "Max",more to protect me from a libel suit than to protect him from
the cops if they ever got wind of this story. Max is/was what you'd call a
"popular" user. That is,he posted,he uploaded, and he was helpfull when someone
needed something. He was a "parttime" sysop, running a bbs when it suited him,
and serving as cosysop on at least 3/4 of the local boards.
Well,Max was young, and from all accounts, quite popular with the ladies. His only
problem in this regard was his fascination with a certain young lady too many
years his junior. Max,was, you see,the tender age of 18.So just about anyone
younger than him who was more than "just a friend" constituted statutory rape.
Well,it came to the ears of one sysops wife one fine autumn afternoon that
Max & his ladylove had "done it". This message was conveyed by a user who was
(at least we are told) Max's best friend on and off the boards. She told this
rumor to her husband, who told it to another sysop, and so the rumor spread...
Now please note that I am not saying that anything happened.(Although, knowing
Max,I PERSONALLY believe he was capable of it).But the rumor was started, and
it spread, and eventually reached the ears of some people valiant enough to come
to the young ladies defense. In fact, they came to her defense so well that
everyone involved got fairly defensive and claimed it was all "just a joke".
Some joke. If my best friend ever started a rumor that could have landed me
behind bars,I'd have found a new friend.
Now lets examine the series of events here. Max's friend starts rumor. Rumor
spreads. People start threatening Max's life & limb.Friend then recants rumor
and claims it was just a joke. The amazing and sad fact of the whole matter
to me was that NOBODY thought for a moment to consider the fact that Max might
NOT have done it. Even his friends took him to be guilty. The above series of
events is what transpired publicly.Privately,I think what happened is this:
Boy meets girl. Boy likes girl, girl likes boy, they flirt. Boy & girl flirt for
months, both know its wrong, but it feels good so neither stop. Boy & girl go
too far once. Both step back. Later, they come together again, and more happens.
Things really get out of hand. Boy confides in "friend" what happened. Boy's
friend has big mouth. Word spreads. Maybe it gets distorted, maybe not. Boy,
fearing the future use of private parts, gets friend to take the heat as idiot
who starts rumors. Boy & girl resume flirting.
Now,at this juncture,I'd like to take a moment to consider one other option.
You see,I have known quite a few younger women in my day (mostly when I was a
younger man, thank whatever!) and I know full well the "status" that landing
a boyfriend so much older than oneself can bring. But whichever way it all
occured,it was wrong, and it jeprodized the lives of the both of them. I would
like to take a moment to say that if the young lady in question should ever
read this file, I do not think any less of you. You've held up rather well
fire. The BBS world is not often kind to women,I have found. Don't let the
opinions of others (even me!) sway you from what you feel is right.
But we are not done with Max yet. You see,he stars in another of the featured
rumors here. Around Christmas, one of our local sysops went on vacation.
And as luck might have it (twice in a row now!) the day he left, his board
crashed. When another user (and a suspicious seeming NEW user at that) told a
tale of having spoken with a sherrif's deputy at the local software store
about computer piracy & an upcoming ***FEDERAL INVESTIGATION*** of the same,
Max linked the downing of that sysops board with his having been busted.
The story,as it was told, was this: The Sherrifs department had called in some
FBI agents to help weed out fraud and piracy on the local computer bulletin
boards. When the sysop in question leaves without saying anything to Max,he
assumes that this must mean he was busted.Max then compunds the problem by
telling folks that not only did the guy get busted, but he's turning states
evidence on everyone else to get himself off the hook.
When folks who know the real story get wind of whats being said, they try to
shut down the rumormill. But the shit REALLY hits the fan when the sysop gets
back and learns what his "friend" has been saying about him in his absence.
Meanwhile, the whole FBI Investigation rumor is gaining momentum, causing alot
of boards to go down,or at least to change policies.
The moral to all of this (if there is one) is that rumors don't just hurt
the people that the rumors are about. They can often turn around and harm the
starters of the rumors themselves. It gets even worse in a society where so few
of us actually know each other.

The Lawless Society
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #6.
I don't know why, but for some reason I've had drugs on my mind lately.
Perhaps it's because I haven't gotten high or even really drunk in a few
months. It's April here on the Jersey shore and in a few short months the
streets and especially the boardwalk will come alive with drugs for sale, for
trade, and possibly for free.
Anyway, what I plan to discuss are a few good ways of using Marijuana
which is the most common drug available. I'll also offer a few suggestions on
what to do once you've achieved a good high.
Pot is probably my favorite for recreational use since there's a variety
of ways to use it and it is usually very easy to hide the fact the you are
high on it if you have to.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Part I: Smoke Up!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The first and most obvious way of using pot is smoking it. Most people smoke
pot by rolling it in cigarette paper or smoking it in a pipe (bowl). If
you're the die-hard joint smoker who loves to roll, let me just suggest that
you look for papers called "Randy's". The papers have a wire running through
the length of each paper. As you smoke, the wire is exposed and as you get
down to the end of the joint you hold the wire, thereby eliminating the need
for a roach clip. These are by far my favorites.
Now let's move on to bowls. Myself, I like to make my own bowls. With a bit
of imagination you can make a bowl out of quite a few ordinary items you
probably have around the house. The easiest is made from the cardboard
rollers in the center of your toilet paper or paper towels. Cut about a 1/2
inch hole in the roller and cover it with tin foil. Poke several holes in the
foil with a toothpick or similar object and you're good to go. Another failry
common makeshift bowl is made from a soda can. This one can be a real pain in
the ass to make if you're out somewhere with no papers and just want a quick
high. What you do is crush the can in the center. Now, find a sharp object
and poke holes through 1 side of the can where you now have a dent. Place
your pot over the holes and ignite. (Suck through the drinking hole in the
can if you haven't figured it out by now.) I've known plenty of people who've
made some great bowls out of various pipes and other things. If you manage to
find some small diameter pipe used for air condintioning or something you may
want to try your hand at that. BTW: Unscrew your kitchen faucet for a screen
to use. The screens in faucets work great to keep the ash out of your throat.
My favorite home made bowl is the tin foil bowl. Simply get yourself a
descent sized sheet of tin foil and a pen. Roll the foil around the pen so
that you have a tube, now bend one end of the foil up about 1/2 inch or so
from the end and you've got the perfect bowl. No screen is needed since the
you can simply pinch the bottom of the bowl and no ash will come through. (You
will still get all the smoke though!) This bowl is also nice to carry around
since you can easily flatten it out and then just re-roll it when you want to
smoke. It's also easily tossable just in case you have to get rid of it
quick.
The third way of smoking pot is with a water pipe. More commonly known as a
water bong or just plain "bong". Bongs come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
I myself have not used a bong on all that many occasions but they do give you
a GREAT high rather quickly. Bongs can be bought at most tobacco shops or at
your local "drug store". A store bought bong will give you the best results
but there are ways to make one at home that should do the trick for you.
Plastic milk or juice jugs work the best. Simply melt a hole just big enough
for a pen to fit through in the side of the container. Next get a BIC pen or
something similar. Rip the innards out of the pen, all you need is the shell.
Stick the point end of the pen into the bottle and position it so that it's
halfway in. Next take a lighter and melt the bottle around the pen so that it
is sealed. You can also use epoxy or model glue if you like, this usually
works better. Now fill the bottle with water so that the half of the pen
that's in the bottle is submerged. You will now place your pot in the open
end of the pen sticking out of the hole in the bottle. I would recommend
sticking some crumpled tin foil down into the pen so that you don't wind up
sucking your pot down into the pen where you can't re-light it if it should go
out. Now light your weed and suck in through the opening on the top of the
bottle. You will get nothing but pure smoke. Adding some ice to the water
will cool the smoke considerably and allow you to take bigger hits. Try to be
careful not to burn the pen. The plastic will give off some pretty toxic
fumes. But hey, you're smoking pot, you can't be too worried about your
health!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Part II: Eat Your Weed!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
And the final method of using pot, Eat It! Although it will take a bit longer
for it to hit you, you can get high from eating pot. Here's a few short
recipes for some magical treats. Just add in about 1/2 cup of ground up weed
to the following things and start cookin'!
First let's start with everyone's favorite, magic brownies. Get your favorite
brownie mix and mix everything it tells you to mix on the box, except for the
butter. Put the butter in a pan and heat up to where it's just beginning to
melt and then mix your pot into it. Now add that into the rest of your mix
and bake as usual. The trick is that THC is fat soluable. That means it
dissolves into fat better than anything else. So use real butter and try not
to get low cal brownie mix, the more fat in there, the more THC that will be
absorbed into the mixture.

time)
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
I think it's fairly obvious that you shouldn't use your best weed for
cooking. You WILL get stoned from eating it, but if it's good weed you're
better off smoking it.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Part III: I'm Stoned! What Now?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Ok, so now you're really stoned and wondering what to do. The first and most
obvious suggestion is to sit back vegetate and watch "The Wall". But, if
you've been smoking for a while and need something new to do, here's a few
simple suggestions.
Take about $20 and hit the local arcade.
Drink the JD Or Beer You Should Have Had In Your Bong.
Shoot Some Pool! (I love doing it stoned)

The Lawless Society
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #7.
Well this is the 7th issue of TLS. Lucky number 7. The following file is an
article ripped from the pages of Playboy. It comes from the June 1992 issue.
This article is a bit humorous but should also be taken seriously. Sex in the
90's can kill you. But other than that, if you're a man, you have a real good
chance of ending up in jail if you're not careful about what you do. I hope
you guys enjoy it, here goes...
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
The Stud Muffin Quiz
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Let us assume for the moment that you are a genuine stud muffin. You are
an attractive man and you like women. Sometimes they like you. You date a
lot and there are a number of notches on your dick. For you, sex is not
complicated. Sex is fun and games and you would like to play forever.
But something strange is happening in your world. Mr. Happy is fine, but
the society you live in is growing darker and more angry. There are new
complexities to the dating game. Terms like date rape and acquaintance rape
and he-said-she-said incidents are cramping your style. These days you seem
to be less a stud muffin and more a stud pancake.
"I used to be worried about being rejected by women," you say. "But now I'm
worried about losing my job or going to jail if I make the wrong move. I
don't know what the rules are anymore."
Your worries are legitimate. As we have seen over the past few years, men
are now especially vulnerable to charges of sexual misconduct. From Thomas to
Smith to Tyson, a contentious area of the law is being explored, and men are
confused about the rules and about what women want (and don't want) in social
situations.
But confusion kills, gentlemen, and it can also be used as an excuse for
much misbehavior. So I have prepared a quiz to cut through the debate and
answer some of your questions.
What follows is the Stud Muffin Quiz. It looks like a multiple choice
test, but watch out. There is only one correct response to each of these
examples, and if you flunk this test in real life, you will not pass go and
you might go to jail:
(1) An attractive female colleague at work seems to be friendly, humorous,
even bawdy. Her cubicle is near yours and you enjoy her presence. The two of
you talk and joke; she is single and mentions no significant other. You
eventually ask her if she would like to meet you after work for a drink. She
says, "No, sorry, I can't." At which point you:
A: Grab your crotch and say "Hey, you don't know what you're missing."
B: Hang around her desk all day chanting "Please baby, please baby, please
baby, please."
C: Refuse to take "no" for an answer and ask her out again every day for the
next three months until she accepts.
D: Smile politely, say "I understand" and never again mention meeting
socially unless she brings it up.
(2) In an attempt to appear cultured, you skip a Saturday afternoon with
your bowling league and go to an art exhibit. As you stand in front of a
painting a beautiful redheaded woman says, "Doesn't that use of acrylics turn
you on?" She invites you out for a drink, and as you sit there with her, she
casually puts her hand on your fly and says, "Let's go back to my place."
Just inside her front door, the two of you fall into a passionate embrace, but
she suddenly breaks away and cries, "No, stop, I can't do this. My body may
want you but my head won't allow it." You:
A: Rip off all her clothes and carry her into her bedroom.
B: Fall at her feet and whine "Please baby, please baby, please baby,
please."
C: Say "I never take 'no' for an answer" and pull her down to the floor
with you.
D: Stop what the two of you have been doing, say "I understand" and get the
hell out of there as fast as you can.
(3) You have been dating a woman for several months and you have been a sly
fox about it. You never make the first move, you always stop when she asks
you to stop and your perpetual horniness has been well disguised. The two of
you have had some hot petting sessions, but you have yet to go all the way.
This night by the lake seems to be the moment. She is naked, you are naked;
she holds your erection in her hands as she sits astride you and seems ready
to insert it. But a stricken look crosses her face, and she abruptly slides
off and huddles on a far corner of the blanket. "No," she cries, "It wouldn't
be right." You:
A: Drag her back on top of you.
B: Snuggle behind her and slip it in before she knows it.
C: Grunt once and say "I suppose a blow job is out of the question?"
D: Take a deep breath, say "I understand" and go jump in the lake.
(4) You are doing it. She loves it, you love it; there seem to be no
complications and happiness is a thing called intercourse. All of the forces
in the universe gather in your groin and your orgasm is near; hers have
passed. Suddenly she pushes you away. "This is wrong. This is immoral and I
should never have agreed to it," she says. You:
A: Say "Tell it to the judge" and reenter her.
B: Say nothing and reenter her.
C: Whine, cry, bicker, moan, gasp and yell before you reenter her.
D: Grit your teeth, stop in mid-stroke, pull out, remember that there are
no witnesses at this moment and that it will be your word against hers
in a court of law and leave immediately, if not sooner.
There you have it. A tough quiz for tough times. Item "D" is the only
acceptable answer in each instance. And I am telling you as bluntly as I can
that, as men, we now operate without choice in this area of our lives. Once
she says no, it's over. So here are some new rules:
Always take "no" for an answer.
Always stop when asked to stop.
Never assume "no" means "yes."
If her lips tell you "no" but there's "yes" in her eyes, keep in mind that
her words, not her eyes, will appear in the court transcript.
It's not Kansas anymore, gentlemen. So you'd better live and date
defensively. If it will help, have a chuckle and think of it like this: Even
Toto might bring you up on charges one day if you're not careful.
That's just the way it is pancake.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Although that "quiz" is a bit humorous, it is 100% correct. Women hold the
entire deck in this card game, and it's their deal, not yours. Be careful
about what you choose to do. Even an innocent kiss as a friend to a friend
can get you in a heap o' shit if it's done in the workplace. Sex might be
great on one special night, but one horrible night later on when you're
fighting can turn that special night into a rape case.
Just remember, sex with a woman is great if you do what you're supposed to
and don't push her to fast. Sex with Bubba in cell block "C" is a living hell
and the chick just ain't worth it!
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Once again...If anyone would care to write for TLS on just about any subject

Issue 8 ?(Who Knows)
Yes, this is ACTUALLY a textfile from TLS. I know its been a
while, but its time for a new beginning. If you do not know why TLS
has not done anything lately (or at all really), it is because we were
limited in what we could say. One of our chief members decided (and I
would say it was a good decision) to go legit. With an investment of
his size, I don't blame him for wanting to keep it if at all possible.
From now on, the group will no longer have a sole support
BBS. So, if you don't know us, you won't have a way to get in contact
with us. Good for us, bad for you. Hopefully these files will be
distributed through a group of local BBS's and work their way outward.
The original intent of this group was to discuss topics, that
most wouldn't because of its "illegality". That is what I and the
other members plan to do. We tried a net, and it didn't work. Never
got off the ground large enough. One of the main reasons, was because
of the scarcity of the average intelligent hacker. Because of the
feds, they have gone deeper underground. Maybe in the future, if we
can contact enough of them, the net will again be a reality.
In our textfiles, we plan to add an ELECTRONIC LAW section
every once in a while...covering the ACTUAL laws of our world, instead
of what the rest of the world thinks is law. This is a rough concept
to report on, but we will try...no garauntees.
Since we are not finished with the electronic law portion,
the topic of this file will be "Social Engineering".
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Did you ever see the movie Fletch? Chevy Chase plays the part
of an overworked and underpaid newspaper reporter. His character, in
my mind, is one of the best Social Engineers of all time (too bad its
the movies.) If you don't know what the term Social Engineer is, just
think about it. Basically it is someone who can change society around
him to fit his purpose. Social Engineering is a very easily practiced
skill, but in order to use it to your full advantage, you must make it
an art form.
We all have done it before...You want something, someone else
has it, and you don't want to ask, so you get it by other means.
Either by trading for it, or making that person like you enough where
he/she will give it to you.
Here we will discuss tips and rules to make YOU a better
social engineer. Lets make up a scenario, shall we? We will then go by
step by step on how to accomplish a goal which seems impossible.
Whenever we hit a crucial discussion, I will stop, and
explain a rule. At the end, you will get a list of them to use on your
own.
SCENARIO : A trusted friend screws you over royally, and is
stabbing you in the back with others.
Well, first thing to do is make sure you are positive that this
friend is doing it....for this scenario we will call him Mac. Do not
take peoples words for ANYTHING unless you a positive that they are
trustworthy. Ask for proof. Once you are reasonably sure that this is
a fact instead of a rumor, you will no doubt be flooded with anger and
foolish plots of physical revenge. Physical revenge in not only too
risky, but is a foolish way to handle the situation. If you try to
beat the shit out of someone there is always a chance of you getting
the shit beat out of yourself.
Step one: Educate yourself.
Find out all you can about your new opponent. The more
information, the better a job can be handled. Ask people you trust
about this person.
RULE : Never take trust for granted, or assume you can trust
someone.
Find out addresses, telephone numbers, accomplices, friends
of him/her, workplaces, hobbies, family members names. Next, pay a
visit. Just get an understanding of what this person lives like. Do
not make yourself obvious.
RULE : Never leave yourself or identity out in the open.
NEVER give anyone the opportunity to catch you.
Park down the street, and observe the house for a while. Get
to know their habbits.
Step two: Make a plot.
Truly think about how you will seek revenge.
RULE : Never go out half cocked or uneducated. Rash
or hurried decisions always fail.
Make a plan fitting for your punishment towards this person.
Remember, FEAR is ones greatest weapon.
RULE : Never forget, Fear is the greatest weapon. Making
a person live a life of fear is better than any
form of physical harm.
If you plan something other than fear, use the tips listed below
to accomplish your goals.
Step 3: Begin your plot.
Remember, people (all) are very judgmental on appearance...
if you look like the gas man, you probably are. If you look like a
fellow employee, you probably are, and if you look like someone who
wants to get information, you probably are. Appearance can change
easily, but always remember there are 5 senses to worry about. Smell
is not too important obviously and neither is touch, but there is
sight (covered by changing appearance) and sound to worry about. If
you can, practice a different dialect or accent. Do not make it too
outlandish, for this can also give yourself away.
Work is a great place to find out about people...A hat that
says "Zippies Courier Service" on it will do the trick to get you
inside. Dress as others that you wish to interrogate. Know what you
will be talking about. For instance, if you are going to visit an
advertising agency, make sure you know a bit about the advertising
industry. At least know the terminology. Always (of course) use a fake
name.
When you meet someone there that you wish to interrogate, do
not be too pushy. Don't make it obvious you are there to find
information. For instance, go to Macs place of work, and look for him.
If you do not know who he is, find a lower employee to introduce you
to him. Say you are expected. Usually there is no hassle at this
point. If you get interrogated back, it is very easy to say you are a
salesman. People assume you are there to sell something. This way, if
you believe someone is onto you, say you are selling widgets, and they
will simply ask you to leave, instead of telling Mac you were there.
Ask someone on their way to lunch, who this person is. No one
going to lunch wants to get involved with anything, and you will
probably be told (rather quickly) were to find him. Do not just take
your opponents word for it. If they say they are a computer operator,
do not assume they are....they could simply be a janitor with an ego.
Step 5: Use your information.
Simply by telling your opponent what is in their house, where
they live, what and where they work, what they drive, and where their
children go to school, you can strike fear into most mortal people.
Remember, if you plan to call this person, never do it from your
house, and never do it in your voice. If at all possible use someone
else to make the call. Then by using inuendoes, you can make them fear
you more....like calling up and saying "Hi, is Mac there? Oh good. I
don't like you very much. I do however like your car...be careful
driving to work tomorrow at <place of work>." inuendoes are great
because they get a point across, and leave so much room for
imagination. Ones own imagination can be their downfall.
Step five: Wrap the game up.
Make sure that this person knows you are serious, and will
never take you for granted again. Sometime around now, they will wish
they never played with you, and will be trying to kiss and make up.
Never blame yourself for anything that they have done to you. It is
very easy for someone to reverse the blame. Do not let this happen to
you. Afterwards, accept their apology (if it suits you) and make sure
that they know there will no longer be hostilities. If you play a game
too long, you will always screw up, and end up losing.
Here are a few Hints to help you out.
1: A silkscreener is your friend. A Gas Co. T-shirt or a phone company
hat is a very good way to gain trust quickly.
2: When talking to someone first talk about something they like. Then
SLOWLY work the conversation into what you want it to be.
3: Make sure you are knowledgeable about any topic which may come up
in conversation.
4: Salespeople are the best to disguise as if you get caught. Everyone
hates salespeople, but knows they are just doing their jobs. They
will most likely just dismiss you instead of asking further
questions.
5: Stationary is the best to convince someone your character is real.
Gasmen usually have a clipboard and several invoices on it.
6: Never do anything illegal until step 4. By that time, it is too
late for any police to set you up to catch you.
7: Get to know a friend of your opponent. People trust friends too
much. If you are introduced to them by a friend, they will trust
you too. "A friend of <so and so> is a friend of mine!"
8: Do not tell anyone what you are doing....if they ask, make
something else up. That way, your opponent will not be weary of you
if someone tells them.
Here are the 12 rules for a social engineer.
1.) Never let anger cloud judgment. Never let anger control
you. Control anger, and change it into ingenuity.
2.) Always make yourself believable. Never assume you are
better at being a rouge than you are. Always support your character
with clothing and other pieces of evidence.
3.) Always find out the most about your opponent as you can
without letting on to anyone your plan. The more educated you are, the
better the plan will work and the more options you have.
4.) If caught, say your a salesperson.
5.) Never use your home address to call your opponent. It is
very easy for them to recognize a number on caller ID or ask the
operator.
6.) If you cant find any information, use a business as a
cover. If a number is unlisted, say you are from "PJ's appliance in
Toms River NJ" and that the person you need a number for is being
brought up on Theft of Services charges, and you need to find their
real number of residence. When court is involved, many operators open
up to you. I have done this before and it works.
7.) Never leave any evidence behind. Not only evidence that
will get you caught, but all evidence. You don't want this person
knowing you are researching them.
8.) Never underestimate your opponent. They may be on to you,
or might be doing the same thing to you. Be careful.
9.) Never surrender information to anyone about what you are
doing.
10.) Know when to quit. A game that lasts too long is sure to
end in a loss.
11.) Fear is ones greatest weapon.
12.) Never make the same mistake twice.

Issue 9
DERFISM : What is it, and who are they?
Well, it seems that this file will be fitting for the local
area. This is not a H/P file, but intended for the users local to this
area. I have noticed many people advancing themselves to the rank of
"Derf 'o da week" INCLUDING myself. Most of the time, this is done all
out of fun, but for the newcomers to the BBS world "derf 'o da week"
is a strange and unfamiliar concept to grasp. Also, the new people do
not know who the former "Derfs" are/were. This file will basically be
a compilation of "Derfs" and what they did to achieve this level of
idiocy.
Lets start out with a BASIC explantion of the term "Derf".
The involved story is too long and has been repeated too many times,
for me to waste space telling it....AGAIN. Basically, to become a
derf, one must do something (or several things) that are beyond
stupidity or ignorance. Because you are new, does not automatically
qualify you as a DERF, although you may be looked upon as one by a few
who are not very patient with new people. Most of the time DERF refers
to one who "Just didn't think". It is a term used to kid someone when
they say something truly moronic (all eventually do). But to achieve
the level of "Derf o' da week" takes a SPECIAL kind of stupid.
Sometimes DODW (derf o' da week) is just a joke, and sometimes it is a
sort of BLACKLIST. Depends of what the derf has done to become DODW.
Well, lets start off EARLY in 1992....we will start the year
'o derfs off right.
January 1st - Massimo Yezzi aka. Blackstar
Well, Massimo was promoted to Derf o' da week for the
following reasons.
1) Assumes because of a friends (away on vacation)
BBS goes down, he decides to take the FEDWATCH '91
Rumors to the fullest extent by telling all he knows
that The Flight Line BBS has been raided by the FEDS
and the sysop has "Turned States Evidence" and has
turned all the locals in. Of course that wasn't true,
but that's the story.
2) When his "Girlfriend" starts playing mindgames with
him, he blames all of his friends (other BBS Users)
for it, saying they have "Stabbed him in the back"
Eventually everything that he did, he blamed on her,
and she did admit to playing with his head, but he
still deserves derfhood for blaming us in the first
place.
3) Generally being an idiot in general.
Derf Rating - ****
January 7th - Blade Runner aka. Ulycees
1) Defending Massimo, Pissing the decent people off
and abandoning all reason to defend his "Friend"
2) Then, kissing ass to get back in with the "Decent"
crowd.
Derf Rating - **
Well, things were quiet for a while until
June 17th - Powerslave (Yes me)
1) For going all out NUTS on someone using a fake
account. Yes, I flipped my lid as I usually do, and
yes, I made a TOTAL ass of myself.
2) For doing the same thing AGAIN to the SAME person
using another FAKE account as a Racist. Yeah, I did
it again. Silly me.
Derf Rating - Make your own decision.
August 21st - George Walpen aka. Zac
1) First, for getting pissed because someone tried
modem sex with one of his daughters. You will
see what I mean in a second.
2) For doing the same thing, to other young women, that
he got so pissed at in the beginning. Yeah, he tried
phone and modem sex with at least 3 other young
females.
3) Didn't realize anyone was on to him. A few people
decided to capture some of his chats. He denied them
all to hell, but when I brought him into chat, he
admitted it all (assuming I wasn't capturing his
confession.) Well, I did<g>.
Derf Rating - ***
September 14th - Dennis Foley aka. XCaliber, MadamX, and more.
1) For doing the same as Zac (number 2 above).
2) For being TOTALLY illiterate on all other BBSs and
for using MORONIC terms like "succoc" for Subroc, and
other stupid sentences like "slav learn to typ e. and
while you at it get m yslippers". I still havent
figured that one out yet.
3) For telling everyone he will kick their ass until
they take him up on his offer to "play". Then he
backs out. And has the gaul to call US immature. I'm
not the most mature minded person, but I am far from
Mr. Foley.
4) Using his Wife's account, and announcing it to the
entire board. Assuming he was not on thin ice to
begin with.
5) For telling the "Old Time BBS users" they don't know
what a real BBS is like. Most of the people he said
this to have from 4 to 11 years experience calling
BBS's.
Derf Rating - ***** Yes, a perfect Derf...5 stars even.
September 19th - Blade Runner aka. Ulycees
Yea, he made it again.
1) Being working, and not being able to afford $5 a
month access fee for a 16 line Chat system, he takes
an ANSI contest (with free access as prizes) and
rips several 1.5 year old Ansi screen made by an ansi
expert (Plasma) and changes it to say he made it.
2) He then tells all to vote for him since he refuses to
pay for a subscription. Yeah, the screen was good,
but it wasn't his to begin with.
3) Then bitches because the people that saw the screens
get pissed about it. He then calls all of these
people backstabbers (After he Loves Massimo, He Hates
Massimo, He loves Mass again, He hates him again, and
right about now he loves him again.) Well, he didn't
win 1st prize. He's lucky they counted to begin with.
Derf Rating this time - **
Entire Month of September - Angel Baby aka. Derfs Wife
1) Yes, the wife of the original derf has entered the
ranks of her beloved hubby. She gets this for being
ALL AROUND IGNORANT. Get the TANJ files to learn
more about it. I don't wanna go into it here. It will
waste so much space<g>.
Derf Rating - ****
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
So, now some of you know what "Derf o' da week" actually is.
Of course some of the people above are not BAD people. That is the
reason I put the events leading into their derfhood in here. You make
you own decision.
There are a list of many others, but these are the top of
the derf list. Poseidon is one of the DERFS not mentioned here, and a
few others have been either left out because of boredom or they have
been forgotten. Remember, this is 1992's Derf list ONLY. 1991 was a
big year for derfs, but most reading this were not around then anyway.
So, next time someone calls you Derf, consider yourself
lucky, and DON'T assume they are out to get you.

Yes, the header of this file IS in Ansi. Call me crazy, but ascii is
getting boring. A lot of people have been asking me about this for a while
now, so here it is; The long awaited Sheep file. This file discusses things
that Fuzzball and I (with 10 years experience a piece) along with the rest
of the group have been talking about for months now. ALL of the group have
been on both sides of this fence at some time or another. We at least know
whats going through the "Sheeps" minds. If you don't understand what the
term SHEEP is, it will be explained in the next paragraph. Many of the
things said here, will be observations made primarialy by Fuzzball and
myself, dealing with Attitudes and experience.
Sheep (1)
- A medium size furry animal that does nothing but eat, sleep, leave its
droppings along the countryside, and blindly follow the sheepherder.
Sheep (2)
- One, who doesn't think about their actions, who does nothing but try to
be like the sheepherder but takes it well too far. Not only do they make
themselves look like total fools, they drag the unknowing sheepherders down
with them, and make CyberSpace uninhabitable by leaving their droppings of
abuse along the cyber countryside!
I think everyone understands definition 1, but I hope definition 2 clears
it up for some who didn't understand. Most of the things we will discuss
are not new by any means. They are more like a stage people go through
during a certain stage in their telecommunications lifetime. But there has
been a strange phenominon (sp) that has happened, which makes us invent
the term SHEEP. Lets explain a bit.
Under normal circumstances, this is the normal progression of modem users,
from origination to their death. Now there are some differences of course
depending on location and things desired, but we feel this is what happens
with the majority of cases.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=*
Day 0 - Person Gets modem.
0-1 Months - Person discovers online services, such as Compu-Serve,
Prodigy, and maybe even a private chat system or two. Some stay at this
stage forever. Nothing is wrong with this. If that is what appeals to the
user, that is fine, but in most cases, it changes to a different situation.
3 months - Users decides they want to put up their own BBS (although they
don't know the first thing about doing it). This is fine in my opinion.
Being helped by others is a great way to learn AS LONG AS this person
realizes they are not close to experienced yet.
10-11 months - This user/sysop gets to be big-headed. Begins to get into a
clique. i.e.-Textfiles, Hacking, Phreaking, Wares (leech!), creative
anarchy, computer pornography, graphics etc.... THIS (in our opinion) is
fine also. Everyone will eventually find something they like over the rest,
and why not spend your time doing what you like?
2-3 years - At this point, the user/sysop is fed up with the people not
involved in their clique, and decides to claim eliteness TO that clique
(discussed above.) As for Fuzz and I, we deleted all the local users on
our board and became importers for piracy organizations out of country
(back in '83). We are all human, I don't look down on people who do this.
It is a natural event.
3-5 years - One of 3 things happen.
1) The user/sysop gets NAILED by the feds.
2) The user fears getting nailed by the feds and drops out of the sysop (or
entire BBS) scene.
3) Person acknowledges his arrogance, and decides to join the rest of the
BBS society.
7 years- Person decides to re-involve himself in the BBS society, and
begins to attempt to change things for the better. Whether it be fighting
for user rights, or puts a board back up, this time to simply share his
feeling on what a board should be like, and what they believe in.
Now, this is all fine and dandy, but we have noticed a strange phenominon
occur. We have not nailed down the cause of it yet but we have our
suspicions. What we have noticed, is at the 3 month point (Yes, 3 months)
some users skip the rest, and go right to the 2-3 year point. They decide
they are the best, and that THEY know what they are doing better than all,
and they don't remember coming up the chain, and being helped by others.
They simply join a clique, or to be more exact, form their own clique.
Unfortunately, what this has done, is make them believe they are gods in
User-Land without having any knowledge, or experience to back them up.
Inevitably (sp) they make total fools of themselves, and piss people off
(people who could crush them). Now, no names will be mentioned as I said
before, but I will use case numbers to describe people. For this little
ditty, we need a ficticious place for them all to gather. Nothing better
than a $20,000 32 line chat system. We shall call it ChatLand from here on
in.
ChatLand was put up by someone who wanted to bring something new,
interesting, fun, and powerful to the area. This person wanted people to be
able to call anytime, and enjoy themselves. The money has been spent (Alot
of it I must say), and the time invested to make this the best around.
Now, the raw materials are there, but a board is only as good as its users
make it. At the same time ChatLand went up, another board, shall we call
it TextLand, started focusing on something we kindly refer to as "Derfs".
The sysop of TextLand is very good friends with the sysop of ChatLand.
Originally, neither thought their boards would conflict with each other,
and definately not hurt the other. But inevitably (sp) they did. If you
dont understand what derf is, read the earlier TLS or TANJ files. That
should help.
Now, one of the activities on TextLand was to make public people who HAVE
the experience, but are still ignorant by logging on a BBS as someone
different and basically fooling them into talking about things that are
supposed to be private. They would buffer the conversation, and make it
into a file, and release it to the public, basically making the
DERF-ELECTED person look like a total idiot. Now, I thought it was funny,
but I also felt bad for the derf too. Its not cool to take things said in
private, and spread them around to everyone. Well, the majority of users
felt the same as I did.
Unfortunately, a small group of new users to ChatLand (all had less than 4
months experience) thought this was hysterical, and really got involved in
TextLand's activities. If TextLand continued doing things as they did
before, things would have been fine, but unfortunately, the small band of
new users started getting over-involved in the DERF activities. We will
call this group SHEEP, for this is the same group that the term was
invented for.
The sheeps activities got so bad, it spread over to ChatLand, and people
were being made derfs on ChatLand. Eventually, ChatLand got a reputation as
"Second home of the Derf-File", so this detrimented ChatLand. Now, The
sysop of TextLand didn't realize his affects on ChatLand. After all, its
not his fault (it isn't). He did not recruit any of the sheep, he didn't
ask them to call ChatLand. He also believes in total freedom of speech (I
also do, but I think mature judgement should be used by the author) so
when the sheep started submitting file entries, he put them in his files.
I nor anyone else blame the sysop of TextLand for the sheeps activities.
At this point, the published sheep begin to get swollen heads. The sheep
often graze in ChatLand. Now ChatLand depends new people calling, and
people having a good time (for references) to support itself. Only problem
is, the sheep (who at this point) have only 5 odd months of experience.
BUT, they are published, so now when a new modem user logs on, and asks a
question about something the sheep are discussing, the sheep rebel, and
abuse him, and he hangs up. Who wants to call somewhere where they get
abused. I sure don't. What the sheep don't realize is for every one of
these people they do this too, that could amount to over 30 people who
won't call, because this new person finds a new board and talks down about
ChatLand. This has happend at LEAST 25 times since June. A rough estimate
is they eliminated 750 people from calling. Thats alot of people to piss
off. Because of this, the people who call ChatLand just to meet others,
get angry. Well, guess what? Instead of admitting their OWN ignorance, they
start to abuse the people who feel this way. And more people stop calling.
It is a wonder ANYONE calls ChatLand anymore. The Sysop of ChatLand has
tried to control them, and is one step from getting rid of them. But now
he has to worry about THEM talking bad about ChatLand. At this point, he
can't take anymore losses. So now you have a small summary of what has
transpired over the last few months with Chat/TextLand.
Here are a few case examples of the sheep. I will catch hell for this, but
none of them have the guts to confront me about it. I will probably have
flat tires when I release this, but TRUST me, I will get the last laugh
anyway.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
Case Study - "Roach"
Roach is not necessarily a bad sheep, but probably the most ignorant. He
has written a few of the DERF files, and a few other nonsense files. *I*
personally refuse to put anything of a nonsense nature in my TLS files. The
others in the group may, but I feel we have a more important need among
the users.
Incident #1 :
Roach is on ChatLand, Babbling about stupid things. The Sysop of ChatLand
logs on as an alias, to see how roach will abuse him. The sysop mentions
something he refers to call a "Radio Modem". Roach (being the ignorant
one he is) decides there is no such thing (sadly its been around since
probably around '84) and decides to bash the sysops alias account. I think
to this day, he still refuses to admit he qualifies for DERF in his own
derf files.
Habbits :
Continually changes handles. Has had at least 5 since he started. Thats
averages to one a month. He often abuses new callers, and tries to pass
himself off as GOD to the others. Simply hasn't been around long enough to
brag.
Case Study - "Einstein"
Einstein is probably the most intellegent NON-THINKING person I know.
He's probably around 16, very small, and doesn't realize ignorance has
nothing to do with intellegence.
Incidents :
Has the NERVE to submit a nonsense story of "101 Uses for the American
Flag" file for TLS publication. I dont THINK so pal! It would be
interesting to a sheep, but not for anyone who wants intellegence in their
life.
Habbits :
Has this annoying habbit of annoying me by threatening older people (once
a Vietnam Vet) with physical violence when he doesn't weigh but a Buck O
5. Granted he has been a good sheep lately, but he ruined it for a few
people, by abusing others and getting them to bad-talk ChatLand.
Case Study - "Caidoz"
Caidoz is a very soft spoken in person. In person he knows his limitations,
but on the boards, he often tries to provoke others, simply so he can be
accepted into the SHEEP organization. He too is new, and quiet ignorant.
Incidents :
Has been witnessed SEVERAL times abusing others. Unlike the rest, he does
not pick on the young user crowd, he picks on the older users, trying to
get them to get pissed off so he can be a Derf author. MANY people have
stopped calling because of his actions, and he has no idea about it. Him,
and Einstein usually work as a team when together. When I confront him
about it on ChatLand, and express my thoughts on his actions, I think he
feels I am taking it too seriously. To me, ChatLand is almost useless to
call anymore. There are like no new users anymore. I know all the ones on
there, and I dont like many of them, so why call? I do it to try to make
ChatLand a better place.
Habbits :
Just VERY annoying, and abusive in general.
Case Study - "Veg"
I wouldn't clasify veg as a sheep, but all in all, he has contributed to
the problem of abuse. Veg feels that BBS's are public, and total freedom of
speech is the law. If I put up a BBS, and I dont like the way someone acts
towards others on it, I will delete him, as he would also. I like Veg in
person. He is a very good person, but I dont think he realizes the damage
he does. BTW-Veg is NOT ignorant. He DOES have a few years experience. Out
of all discussed in this file, I hope VEG takes this as simply MY opinion.
It is not a suggestion, just an expression.
Case Study - "12 O'Clock"
This person also has a lot of years experience. Unfortunately, the sheep
have grasped on to him as a sheepherder. He knows it, and he is a good
person. He is trying to teach them things. He has a vast knowledge about
alot of things, but I wish he would teach them how to treat other users
first.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
Hopefully, this will spread light to the sheep, and make them realize what
they are actually doing. There are MANY more people that are on the border
of SHEEPDOM. Maybe this will sway your decision a bit. If you sit back,
and remove yourself from the situation, you will realize that our
observations are pretty real, and honest. Its time to grow the hell up
people. To "Veg" and "12 O'Clock", I DO NOT nor anyone else hold you
accountable for thier actions at ALL. Please, take my critisism
constructively, and do as mentioned before...step out of the situation,
and take a look at THEM.
As said before, the herders are not to blame. They have done nothing to
deserve the reputation the sheep are giving them. I hope they eventually
(if not already) realize THEY are also being hurt in this.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
To the people not in this area (like our new friends in Ohio) take this as
a story that COULD happen to you. Learn from ours and others mistakes.
Don't let them take over. Hey, if anything, you get a new nifty term to use
for users like this - Sheep!

The Lawles Society

Issue #11
12/1/92
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
The Fallout of #10
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As expected, I caught hell for TLS10.TXT . Yes, even I must admit,
the ansi header was quiet nasty, so back to the original. Anyway, I caught
hell from the people I expected, but I also caught it from those I didn't
expect it from. This will be an ANSWER to the questions that have popped
up. Some to show the rest of society things that should have been said,
things that shouldn't have, and things that should have been said
differently. It is also to express my SOLE feelings on the matters that
have transpired in the day since its release. Maybe the rest of society
will change their opinions after this. Am I the fool that has crushed the
innocent people? Maybe....You decide.
To start off, I would like to apologize to the aforementioned
sysop of TextLand. He took some minor offense to some of the things
mentioned, we discussed them, and I hope we cleared alot of things up. I
should have made it more clear that TextLand and its files are to no way
be considered equal to the actions or considered involved with the term I
loosley used - DERF FILE. TextLand has much more to offer, and in
actuality DERF is of the smallest involvement in TextLand. I think I said
something like "One of the activities of TextLand is the DERF FILE". I
should have made it more clear how small of a part that DERF actually is
to TextLand. I am also friends with this person, and in all honesty, I
should have expressed my thought on it in person long ago (as should the
rest of this group-every single one of us) but didn't. I do not know what
stopped me, or the rest of us, from doing so. The sysop of TextLand really
has NO INVOLVEMENT with other peoples activities, and I think I was trying
to keep him uninvolved in it (although to make people understand why I did
this,it was needed to tell some sort of history). I have been told, and
agree I went about it wrong in his case. I am sorry.
To "Veg"- In all honesty, I do not understand why you are angry
with me. EVERYTHING I said, has been said publically by many others, on a
lot of occaisions, to which you did nothing but laugh it off. Why you
chose this file to single out, I don't know. You and 12 O'Clock think of
me as a hypocrit. Why I do not know. Yes, I stated in the 10 that I agree
with SELECTIVE AUTHORS JUDGEMENT. That in no way means total censorship.
You think me as a Hypocrit for releasing an un-associated file called the
Zac Chat. I do not understand why you think me hypocratic, because you are
the one who pestered me until I released it. The Zac chat involved
embarrasing things people did not mean to become public, so I did censor
some parts I felt appropriate. This is different. This is something that
has bothered many people for a long time. No one did a thing about it
until the day that I and Subroc stated our feelings on the abuse issue.
After I did, I was given the attitude that I am silly, too hard on them,
too serious, and I was even whispered "You must be Sexually frustrated."
So, in the abuse case, all knew my stance on it, and no one chose to
listen. I am not going to sit by, and watch a friend of mine's great system
be wasted, or ruined. You were to be no way associated with the Sheep, but
you have exploded several times on ChatLand. Even a friend of yours said
"[Veg] should be monitored, to make sure he doesn't blow up again!" or
something not in those exact words. I accept what you do perfectly well
until it starts hurting me or my friends. You forced me to release the Zac
Chat, and now you say what I said is inappropriate? Who's the hypocrit? I
am not sure you are pissed at that, I must assume though since you refuse
to talk to me about it.
To "12 O'Clock" - You said this night sarchasticly (sp) that You
were the sheep herder. I did not intend it to be taken that way. I meant
it to be taken as the following.....A smart, nice person, who helps people
learn things they desire and that I think you don't realize what these
people are making you look like and how much damage they are doing to
ChatLand. You also stated you thought I was a hypocrit. As I said, your
beliefs are fine. I accept them perfectly well. As for you reading things
into the file that were not intended, that was not my intention and
whatever you think becsue of things not expressed, is not my fault. I
meant to actually compliment you, but obviously it has been taken
differently. I apologize.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
Thats the end of the apologies people. Now, for the good stuff.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
I have noticed that since the release of this file dozens of
people no longer backing me. Essentially, they felt the pressure, and
backed out, and jumped on the "Bash Powerslave" bandwagon. Even 2 VERY
CLOSE FRIENDS. Yes, I was the sole writer of TLS10, but it has been
discussed for many months with other people. Many other people. The
information in it is not heresay, or half-truths.....it is 100% true. Keep
in mind, some of the judgement things are my opinions only. I refuse to
speak for others, but there were at least 30 people on ChatLand
encouraging me to write this, and expressing their anger to it. Now, I can
only find 1. To those people (You ALL know who you are) you will not have
my trust again. Fuck me once, Shame on you. Fuck me twice, Shame on me.
You people are cowards, and have no backbone whatsoever. To my 2 close
friends that abandoned me, I will act like nothing happened until you come
to me. One I know will not. I know them to well, one will and I am
waiting. Some have told me that it was the way I wrote it. Maybe it is.
Let the rest be the judge of that. But the content could not be more
accurate.
I had a discussion with the one I callsigned "Roach". At first he
denied everything that was mentioned. When I made it clear I have proof,
and witnesses, he admitted to a few of them. To this day he refuses to
admit everything, and every sentence says something like "So now everyone
hates me. Whoa...big deal. I dont care. You believe what you want to
believe.". As I told this person, I do not hate him. I think he has a lot
to learn before he can criticize (sp) anyone. He kept saying that what I
mentioned was all in the past. As I said in the file, he has been good
recently (The last few weeks), and he even tried to be helpful to a bad
situation.......ONCE. To him-I apologize for HOW I said things, not WHAT I
said. Basically to all 3 of the sheep mentioned. There are at least 2 more
that I did not mention. DO not believe this is the only 3. There are 3
more on the border of sheepdom also. Unfortunately, the bash powerslave
movement might have quickened their pace to become sheep. Hopefully not.
If they do, the file backfired.
I have not talked to Einstein or Caidoz yet. I can assume what
they will do. I will not say anything until they actually talk to me, but
for Roach and the other 2- You continually deny being abusive to others.
There is no doubt in mine or anyone elses mind that you are. At least fess
up to that. I agree, the personal attacks should have been left out, but
everyone wanted them left in. As many abovely mentioned - I did as the
people wanted.
To Einstein specifically - I GREATLY apologize for the FLAG FILE
comment. That was an opinion, and not all agree. In fact, many people liked
it. What you do is good (when it comes to writing things like that) and I
am afraid I took yours and the rest of the sheeps other actions in mind
when I wrote it. I am sorry for a very bad example of a personal attack.
Keep writing. Now think how the new users felt when they were verbally
assaulted for asking questions you guys dubbed as moronic. Don't you guys
remember being new? You must, it was only months ago. You guys are barely
out of your modem diapers yet. I shall think how others will feel (before
I say or write something like this again) if you guys agree to.
It has proven to me that you people will not let me be like you.
You people find what I did atrocious. You made fun of people that you
didn't like, or people you claimed as "Morons". All I did was do the same
things to people who hurt others, and degrated many. Who is calling the
kettle black?
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
I hope the people reading this think on what I said for awile, and
not do what they did with TLS10; Bash Powerslave to make us feel better.
That is the truth, because what I said was honesty, and all mentioned know
it. I am sorry this cannot be handled more maturely. Granted, I did not
help much by writing it the WAY I did, but all you did is make it worse.
You people seem to forget I tried to get you to understand the affects of
your actions, but you refused, and thought me as stupid. You can think
what you like. I know better and so do the people. Even the ones who
changed their minds about the whole thing because they feared what "Other
people would think". They know the truth, and they will have the sleepness
nights....not me.
To Sysop of TextLand, 12 O'Clock, and Veg - I hope you accept my
apology, and understand where I was and am coming from. If not, I hope you
simply accept it as my opinion, and not as a personal attack.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-*
To people who have NO IDEA what this is about-
I am sorry this is another locally based TLS file. Hopefully
there will be no more of these, but I had to reach these people somehow.
What I post or say in public is never heard. The only way to get to them
is through TextFiles (and boy did it). Lesson to be learned-always think
about what you say. Honesty can come back and haunt you no matter how
honest you are. Never take people for granted. Never trust acquaintences
to back you up when the shit hits the fan, cause they will be gone. Say
what the public wants, and not what you feel. This may be my last TLS
Textfile. We will see how things progress in the next few weeks. If it
is.....I can't say it's been a blast, but at least its been something.
Even someone doing this for close to 11 years can learn. Unfortunately the
hard way.
Bah Hindu, LlamaToes and all the rest!

Issue #12
February Something, 1993

Bored to Hell and back.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==
Stardate - Oh hell, sometime in early February.
I recall sitting in my car in front of Fuzzballs house for
close to a half hour reading a textfile that Fuzz printed out for me.
It described the extreme emotional boredom that a good friend of mine
experienced while he was temporarily "separated" from his modem, and
the rest of Cyber/Space.
I remember reading it, and thinking "Boy, he must really be
into this stuff a lot to be so distraught over this" but i didn't
quite know how he felt. Not honestly. His file seemed to describe a
few VERY funny Cyber/Withdrawal symptoms. Well, soon after the release
of this file, he was once again, reunited with his modem and
concurrently rejoined the cyber/community.
Therefore, after the humor end of his file wore off, most of
it was forgotten. But WAIT! There's MORE.
A week ago, while my mother was in one of her favorite loony
bins, (this one being in Arizona) my stepfather (also a clinically
insane person - has escaped from 3 institutions in NJ) decided he
didn't need to take his lithium anymore.
Let me divulge a tidbit of history on this moron. While in
Marlboro (Mental Ward) he escaped. He didn't run away...he ran into
the woods....stripped off all of his clothes, found a patch of poison
ivy, and proceeded to roll in it. Not only that, but he started
rubbing clumps of it all over his Genitalia and even shoved some into
some orifices not meant for these purposes. This is not an
exaggeration. He has told me this himself, and to my face. Yes, this
is the man my mother loves. This is one small incident in his long
history of loony tricks (but I thought this one is one of the
funniest). All of this was brought on by one small factor. He stopped
taking his lithium.
Now wonder boy remembers this incident very well, but for
some reason, thinks it normal. Anyway, to make a long story very
short, while mother-dear is away in the
A.H.F.T.W.W.T.P.L.A.O.M.T.H.P.D.N.B.L.T.Y. (Arizona Hospital For Those
Who Want To Pay Large Amounts Of Money To Have People Do Nothing But
Listen To You,) brain-child (my step father) decided he doesn't need
lithium anymore. So, he goes on a rampage, yelling at everything I do.
I decided I wasn't going to stay and take shit from him anymore. So,
while he was away at work, I collected a few cyber/geeks and loaded up
a U-Haul with everything I own, INCLUDING the business. By 2pm I was
on my way to Edison, NJ to live with my grandparents at least till
I get into and out of college.
Today I finally got finished unpacking my stuff, and realized that
I have even less of a life than before. Now, I know no-one, do nothing
socially, go nowhere.....its enough to depress the best of us.
To top it all off, my friends from where I used to live, called
me, and wanted me to come down and party with them. I had to decline -
I have no money for that much of a commute.
So, I decide to call a number that Tal Meta gave me. A local BBS
to me. Ya know, even re-locating in Cyber/Space stinks. Again, I know
no-one, don't find much in common with this new bunch up here, and its
a much different BBS crowd. Back home, people meet on the systems and
party....I don't think anyone knows anyone here. Seems like people
here don't do anything for entertainment.....the just cope and
survive. I'm too young to stop having fun.
Now don't get me wrong, life is still sorta interesting....like
yesterday, my grandparents took me out to dinner. Number one, dinner
with the Grandfolks is NOT the best way to meet women. You look like a
nerd! Anyway, We ate, and my grandfather left to bring the car around
for me and my grandmother. He parked in the back lot. Anyway, my
grandmother saw a blinking light in a car (burglar alarm light) so
what does she do? She walks over to the car, puts her hands on the
window and looks in....Yes, she set the alarm off. I don't feel TOO
stupid. Anyway, the owner shuts it off, and she tries to explain to
the owner what happened (without seeming old and confused). After the
owner of the car goes inside again, we see my grandfathers car waiting
in front of the restaurant down the street. Sheeesh. Good 'ol Al-Zimer
strikes again. So, after we laugh for a while, I walk down the street,
and alert him to his mistake.
So, as you see, its not uneventful-.....just much different than
I am accustomed to. And not very fun.
Strange things run through your mind when you are separated from
your Cyber/'Hood. Like I recall thinking up possible solutions to the
worlds pollution problem, cures for cancer, what would the child of a
monkey and a dolphin look like....and who the president will be in the
year 2012.
NOW I understand what my friend was describing in his textfile.
If there is such a thing as Cyber/Withdrawal, I got it.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Anyway, I saw a copy of TIME Magazine today.......the cover story
- Cyber/Punks. Not about the Books or Games, but about us. I read it,
and found it to be full of in-accuracies and confusion. BUT I must
say it is still probably the best report article on the topic that I
have seen to date. At least they catch the general concept.
I have transcripted the article for you since I am so bored.
(Taken from TIME Magazine, Feb 8th Edition, 1993. Originally
written by Philip Elmer-Dewitt.)
In the 1950s it was beatniks, staging a coffee-house
rebellion against the LEAVE IT TO BEAVER conformity of the Eisenhower
era. In the 1960s the hippies arrived, combining anti-war activism
with the energy of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Now a new subculture is
bubbling up from the underground, popping out of computer screens like
a piece of futuristic HYPERTEXT (Now they explain what Hypertext is).
They call it cyberpunk, a late-20th century term pieced
together from CYBERNETICS(the science of communication and control
theory) and PUNK (an anti-social rebel or hoodlum). Within this odd
pairing lurks the essence of cyberpunk culture. It's a way of looking
at the world that combines an infatuation with high-tech tools and a
disdain for conventional ways of using them. Originally applied to a
school of hard-boiled science-fiction writers and then to certain
semi-tough computer hacker, the word cyberpunk now covers a broad
range of music, art, psychedelics, smart drugs and cutting-edge
technology. The cult is new enough that fresh offshoots are sprouting
every day, which infuriates the hard-core cyberpunks, who feel they
got there first.
Stewart Brand, editor of the hippie-era WHOLE EARTH CATALOG,
describes cyberpunks as "technology with attitude." Science fiction
writer Bruce Sterling calls it "an unholy alliance of the technical
world with the underground of pop culture and street-level anarchy."
Jude Milhon, a cyberpunk journalist who writes under the byline St.
Jude, defines it as "the place where the worlds of science and art
overlap, the intersection of the future and now." What cyberpunk is
about, says Rudy Rucker, a San Jose State University mathematician who
writes science-fiction books on the side, is nothing less than "the
fusion of humans and machines."
As in any counterculture movement, some denizens would deny
that they are part of a "movement" at all. Certainly they are not as
visible from a passing car as beatniks or hippies once were. Ponytails
(on men) and tatoos (on women) do not a cyberpunk make-though dressing
all in back and donning mirrored sunglasses will go a long way. And
although the biggest cyberpunk journal claims a readership approaching
70,000, there are probably no more then a few thousand computer
hackers, futurists, fringe scientists, computer-savvy artists and
musicians, and assorted science fiction geeks around the world who
actually call themselves cyberpunks.
Nevertheless, cyberpunk may be the defining counterculture of
the computer age. It embraces, in spirit at least, not just the
nearest thirtysomething hacker hunched over his terminal but also
nose-ringed twentysomethings gathered at clandestine RAVES, teenagers
who feel about Macintosh computers the way their parents felt about
Apple Records, and even pre-adolescent vidkids fused like Krazy Glue
to their Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis games-the training wheels of
cyberpunk. Obsessed with technology, especially technology that is
just beyond their reach (like BRAIN IMPLANTS), the cyberpunks are
future oriented to a fault. They already have one foot in the 21st
century, and time is on their side. In the long run, we will all be
cyberpunks.
The cyberpunk look-a kind of SF (Science Fiction) surrealism
tweaked by computer graphics-is already finding its way into art
galleries, music videos and Hollywood movies. Cyberpunk magazines,
many of which are " 'Zines" cheaply published by desktop computer and
distributed by electronic mail, are multiplying like cable-TV
channels. The newest, a glossy, big-budget entry called "wired",
premiered last week with Bruce Sterling on the cover and adds from the
likes of Apple computer and AT&T. Cyberpunk music, including ACID
HOUSE and INDUSTRIAL, is popular enough to keep several record
companies and scores of bands, cranking out CD's. Cyberpunk oriented
books are snapped up by eager fans as soon as they hit the stores.
(Sterling's latest, The Hacker Crackdown, quickly sold out it's first
hard-cover printing of 30,000.) A piece of cyberpunk performance art,
Tubes, starring Blue Man Group, is a hit off-Broadway. And cyberpunk
films such as Blade Runner, Videodrome, Robocop, Total Recall,
Terminator 2 and The Lawnmower Man have moved out of the cult market
and into the mall.
Cyberpunk culture is likely to get a boost from, of all
things, the Clinton-Gore Administration, because of a shared interest
in what the new regime calls America's "data highways" and what the
cyberpunks call CYBERSPACE. Both terms describe the globe-circling,
interconnected telephone network that is the conduit for billions of
voice, fax and computer-to-computer communications. The incoming
administration is focused on the wiring, and it has made strengthening
the network's high-speed data links a priority. The cyberpunks look at
those wires from the inside; they talk of the network as if it were an
actual place-a VIRTUAL REALITY that can be entered, explored and
manipulated.
Cyberspace plays a central role in the cyberpunk world view.
The literature is filled with "console cowboys" who prove their mettle
by donning virtual-reality headgear and performing heroic feats in the
imaginary "matrix" of cyberspace. Many of the 'punks real-life heroes
are also computer cowboys of one sort or another. Cyberpunk, a 1991
book by two New York Times reporters, John Markoff and Kate Hafner,
features profiles of three canonical cyberpunk hackers, including
Robert Morris, the Cornell graduate student whose COMPUTER VIRUS
brought the huge network called THE INTERNET to a halt.
But cyberspace is more than a playground for hacker high
jinks. What cyberpunks have known for some time-and what 17.5 million
modem-equipped computer users around the world have discovered-is that
cyberspace is also a new medium. Every night on Prodigy, CompuServe,
GEnie and thousands of smaller computer bulletin boards, people by the
hundreds of thousands are logging on to a great computer-mediated
gabfest, an interactive debate that allows them to leap over barriers
of time, place, sex and social status. Computer networks make it easy
to reach out and touch strangers who share a particular obsession or
concern. "We're replacing the old drug-store soda fountain and town
square, where community used to happen in the physical world," says
Howard Rheingold, a California-based author and editor who is writing
a book on what he calls VIRTUAL COMMUNITIES.
Most computer users are content to visit cyberspace now and
then, to read their electronic mail, check the bulletin boards and do
a bit of electronic shopping. But cyberpunks go there to live and
play-and even die. The WELL, one of the hippest virtual communities on
the Internet, was shaken 2.5 years ago when one of it's most active
participants ran a computer program that erased every message he had
ever left-thousands of postings, some running for many pages. It was
an act that amounted to virtual suicide. A few weeks later, he
committed suicide for real.
The WELL is a magnet for cyberpunk thinkers, and it is there,
appropriately enough, that much of the debate over the scope and
significance of cyberpunk has occurred. The question "Is there a
cyberpunk movement?" launched a freewheeling on-line FLAME-fest that
ran for months. The debate yielded, among other things, a fairly
concise list of "attitudes" that, by general agreement, seem to be
central to the idea of cyberpunk. Among them:
-Information wants to be free.
A good piece of information-age technology will eventually
get into the hands of those who can make the best use of it,
despite the best efforts of the censors, copyright lawyers and
DATACOPS.
-Always yield to the hands-on imperative.
Cyberpunks believe they can run the world for the better, if
they can only get their hands on the control box.
-Promote decentralization.
Society is splintering into hundreds of subcultures and
designer cults, each with its own language, code and life-style.
-Surf the edges.
When the world is changing by the nanosecond, the best way to
keep your head above water is to stay at the front end of the
Zeigeist.
The roots of cyberpunk, curiously, are as much literary as
they are technological. The term was coined in the late 80's to
describe a group of science-fiction writers-and in particular WILLIAM
GIBSON, a 44 year old American, now living in Vancouver. Gibson's
NEUROMANCER, the first novel to win SF's triple crown-the Hugo, Nebula
and Phillip K. Dick awards-quickly became a cyberpunk classic,
attracting an audience beyond the world of SF. Critics were intrigued
by a dense, technopoetic prose style that invites comparisons to
Hammet, Burroughs and Pynchon. Computer-literate readers were drawn by
Gibson's nightmarish depictions of an imaginary world disturbingly
similar to the one they inhabit.
In fact, the key to cyberpunk science-fiction is that it is
not so much of a projection into the future as a metaphorical
evocation of today's technological flux. The hero of NEUROMANCER, a
burned-out, drug-addicted street hustler named Case, inhabits a sleazy
INTERZONE on the fringes of a megacorporate global village where all
transactions are carried out in New Yen. There he encounters Molly, a
sharp-edged beauty with reflective lenses grafted to her eye-sockets
and retractable razor blades implanted in her fingers. They are hired
by a mysterious employer who offers to fix Case's damaged nerves so he
can once again enter cyberspace-a term Gibson invented. Soon Case
discovers that he is actually working for an AI (artificial
intelligence) named Wintermute, who is trying to get around the
restrictions placed on AI's by the TURING POLICE to keep the computers
under control. "What's important to me," says Gibson, "is that
NEUROMANCER is about the present."
The themes and motifs of cyberpunk have been percolating
through the culture for nearly a decade. But they have coalesced in
the past few years, thanks in large to am upstart magazine called
MONDO 2000. Since 1988, MONDO's editors have covered cyberpunk as
Rolling Stone Magazine chronicles rock music, with celebrity
interviews of such cyberheroes as NEGATIVELAND and TIMOTHY LEARY,
alongside features detailing what's hot and what's on the horizon.
Mondo's editors have packaged their quirky view of the world into a
glossy book titled Mondo 2000; A Users Guide to the New Edge
(HarperCollins; $20). Its cover touts alphabetic entries on everything
from virtual reality and wetware to designer aphrodisiacs and
TECHNO-EROTIC PAGANISM, promising to make cyberpunk's rarefied
perspective immediately accessible. Inside, in an innovative hypertext
format (which is Echoed in this article), relatively straightforward
updates on computer graphics, multi-media and fiber optics accompany
wild screeds on such recondite subjects as SYNESTHESIA and TEMPORARY
AUTONOMOUS ZONES.
The book and the magazine that inspired it are the product of
a group of brainy (if eccentric) visionaries holed up in a rambling
Victorian mansion perched on a hillside in Berkeley, California. The
MTV-style graphics are supplied by designer Bart Nagel, the
overcaffeinated prose by Ken Goffman (writing under the pen name R.U.
Sirius) and Alison Kennedy (listed on the masthead as Queen Mu,
"domineditrix"), with help from Rudy Rucker and a small staff of
free-lancers and contributions from an international cast of cyberpunk
enthusiasts. The goal is to inspire and instruct but not to lead. "We
don't want to tell people what to think," says assistant art director
Heide Foley. "We want to tell them what the possibilities are."
Largely patched together from back issues of Mondo 2000
magazine (and its precursor, a short-lived 'zine called Reality
Hackers), the Guide is filled with articles on all the traditional
cyberpunk obsessions, from ARTIFICIAL LIFE to VIRTUAL SEX. But some of
the best entries are those that report on the activities of real
people trying to live the cyberpunk life. For example, Mark Pauline, a
San Francisco performance artist, specializes in giant machines and
vast public spectacles: sonic booms that pin audiences to their chairs
or the huge, stinking vat of rotting cheese with which he perfumed the
air of Denmark with to remind the citizenry of its Viking roots. When
an explosion blew the thumb and three fingers off his right hand,
Pauline simply had his big toe grafted where his thumb had been. He
can pick things up again, but now he's waiting for medical science and
grafting technology to advance to the point where he can replace his
jerry-built hand with one taken from a cadaver.
Much of Mondo 2000 strains credibility. Does physicist Nick
Herbert really believe there might be a way to build TIME MACHINES?
Did the CRYONICS experts at Trans-Time Laboratory really chill a
family pet named Miles and then, after its near death experience, turn
it back into what its owner describes as a "fully functional dog"? Are
we expected to accept on faith that a SMART DRUG called
centrophenoxine is an "intelligence booster" that provides "effective
anti-aging therapy," or that another compound called hydergine
increases mental abilities and prevents damage to brain cells? "All of
this has some basis in today's technologies," says Paul Saffo, a
research fellow at the Institute for the Future. "But it has a very
anticipatory quality. These are people who assume that they will shape
the future and the rest of us will live with it."
Parents who thumb through Mondo 2000 will find much here to
upset them. An article on house music makes popping MDMA (Ecstasy) and
thrashing all night to music that clocks 120 beats per minute sound
like an experience no red-blooded teenager would want to miss. After
describing in detail the erotic effects of massive doses of L-Dopa,
MDA and deprenyl, the entry on aphrodisiacs adds an afterthought that
in some combinations these drugs can be fatal. Essays praising the
beneficial effects of psychedelics and smart drugs on the "information
processing" power of the brain sit alongside RANTS that declare, among
other things, that "safe sex is boring sex" and that "cheap thrills
are fun."
Much of this, of course, is a cyberpunk pose. As Rucker
confesses in his preface, he enjoys reading and thinking about
psychedelic drugs but doesn't really like to take them. "To me the
political point of being pro-psychedelic," he writes, "is that this
means being against consensus reality, which I very strongly am." To
some extent, says author Rheingold, cyberpunk is driven by young
people trying to come up with a movement they can call their own. As
he puts, "They're tired of all these old geezers talking about how
great the 60's were."
That sentiment was echoed by a recent posting on the WELL. "I
didn't get to pop some 'shrooms and dance around naked with several
hundred of my peers," wrote a cyberpunk wannabe who calls himself
Alien. "To me, and to a lot of other generally disenfranchised members
of my generation, surfing the edges is all we've got."
More troubling, from a philosophic standpoint, is the theme
of DYSTOPIA that runs like a bad trip through the cyberpunk world
view. Gibson's fictional world is filled with glassy-eyed girls strung
out on their walkman-like SIMSTIM DECKS and young men who get their
kicks from MICROSOFTS plugged into sockets behind their ears. His
brooding, dehumanized vision conveys a strong sense that technology is
changing civilization and the course of history in frightening ways.
But many of his readers don't seem to care. "History is a funny thing
for cyberpunks," says Christopher Meyer, a music-synthesizer designer
from Calabasas, California, writing on the WELL. "It's all data. It
all takes up the same amount of space on disk, and a lot of it is just
plain noise."
For cyberpunks, pondering history is not as important as
coming to terms with the future. For all their flaws, they have found
ways to live with technology, to make it theirs-something the back-to-
the-land hippies never accomplished. Cyberpunks use technology to
bridge the gulf between art and science, between the world of
literature and industry. Most of all, they realize that if you don't
control technology, it will control you. It is a lesson that will
serve them-and all of us-well in the next century.

Time Magazine's Definitions of Cyberpunk Terminlogy
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Acid House - White-hot dance music that falls somewhere between disco
and hip-hop.
Artificial Life - Inspired by the behavior of computer viruses,
scientists are wondering how sophisticated a
computer system or robot would have to be before you
could say it was "alive". One computer-software
company, Maxis, has marketed a whole line of
simulated animals, ant colonies, cities, train
systems and even a planet-like organism called Gaia.
Brain Implants - Slip a microchip into snug contact with your gray
matter (a.k.a. wetware) and suddenly gain instant
fluency in a foreign language or arcane subject.
Computer Virus - The cybernetic analogue of AIDS, these
self-replicating programs infect computers and can
destroy data. There are hundreds loose in cyberspace,
although few are as destructive as the internet
virus-which is now classified as a "worm" because the
writer of the program did not mean to do damage.
Cryonics - For a price, a terminally ill patient can be frozen-as in
the new movie Forever Young-until some future time when a
cure has been discovered. Some people save on storage costs
by having just their head frozen.
Cybernetics - Norbert Wiener of M.I.T. was designing systems for World
War ][ antiaircraft guns when he realized that the
critical component in a control system, whether animal
or mechanical, is a feedback loop that gives a
controller information on the results of its actions.
He called the study of these control systems cybernetics
(from kybernetes, the greek word for helmsman) and
helped pave the way for the electronic brains that we
call computers.
Cyberspace - SF writer William Gibson called it "a consensual
hallucination . . . a graphic representation of data
abstracted from the banks of every computer in the human
system." You can get there simply by picking up the
phone.
Dystopia - Utopia's evil twin. Merriam-Webster defines it as "an
imaginary place which is depressingly wretched and whose
people lead a fearful existence."
Datacops - Any department or agency charged with protecting data
security. Most notorious: The U.S. Secret Service, whose
1990 Operation Sundevil launched constitutionally
questionable predawn raids on computer hackers in a dozen
U.S. cities and provoked international outrage in the
cyberpunk community.
Ecstasy - Enthusiasts describe this New Age psychedelic, which
heightens the senses, as "LSD without the hallucinations."
The drug was outlawed in the U.S. in 1987.
Flame - Sociologists note that, without visual cues, people
communicating on-line tend to flame: to state their views more
heatedly than they would face-to-face.
Industrial - Mixing rhythmic machine clanks, electronic feedback and
random radio noise, industrial music is "the sounds our
culture makes as it comes unglued," says cyberpunk writer
Gareth Branwyn
Internet - The successor of an experimental network built by the U.S.
Defense Department in the 1960's, the Internet links at
least 3 million computers, many of them University- and
research related, around the world. Users can connect to
the Internet by phone to share information or tap into
data-banks.
Interzone - The wasteland setting of William Burroughs' Naked Lunch
(1959) has become a favorite haunt for cyberpunk writers.
It is here, in Gibsons words, that "the street finds it's
own uses for things," subverting cutting edge technology
to suit the needs of the underground.
Microsofts - Without apologies to the software company by the same
name, Gibson has his fictional characters alter their
reality by plugging into their brain these angular
fragments of colored silicon, which house a
read-only-memory chip.
Mondo 2000 - Mondo is Italian for world; 2000 is the year. Says editor
R.U. Sirius: "I like the idea of a magazine with an
expiration date."
Negativeland - Better known for media pranks than records (Helter
Stupid), this band canceled a tour in 1988 after a
Minnesota teen axed his family to death. The band's
press release said the family had been arguing about
Negativeland's song Christianity is Stupid. The story
was a hoax, but the press ran with it, turning the band
into cyberpunk heroes.
Punk - Cyberculture borrows heavily from the rebellious attitude of
punk music, sharing with such groups as the Sex Pistols a
defiance of mainstream culture and an urge to turn modern
technology against itself.
Rants - A hyperbolic literary form favored by cyberpunk writers, these
extended diatribes make up in attitude what they lack in
modesty.
Raves - Organized on the fly (sometimes by electronic mail) and often
held in warehouses, raves are huge, nomadic dance parties that
tend to last all night, or until the police show up.
Psychedelic mood enhancers and funny accessories (white cotton
gloves, face masks) are optional.
Simstim Decks - These simulated stimuli machines are what television
might evolve into. Rather than just watching your
favorite characters on TV, you strap some plastic
electrodes to your forehead and experience their
thoughts and feelings-slightly edited, of course, to
spare you the headaches and hangovers.
Smart Drugs - "Don't eat any of the stuff they say will make you
smarter," says Bruce Sterling. "It will only make you
poorer."
Synaesthesia - From the greek SYN (union) and AESTHESIA (sensation),
synaesthesia is a merging of sensory input in which
sounds appear as colors in the brain or words evoke a
specific taste or smell.
Techno-erotic paganism - Sound interesting? That's probably why the
editors of Mondo 2000 put the term on the
cover of their book. Unfortunately, they
never get around to explaining what it means.
Temporary Autonomous Zones - These are the electronic analogue of
mountain fortresses and pirate islands,
but they can be formed or dismantled in a
flash, says cyberpunk essayist Hakim Bey.
As political systems decay and networking
becomes more widespread, he envisions a
proliferation of autonomous areas in
cyberspace: giant worker-owned
corporations, independent enclaves
devoted to data piracy, Green-Social
Democrat collectives, anarchist
liberation zones, etc.
The Well - Compared with million-plus member networks such as
CompuServe, Prodigy, the Northern California-based Whole
Earth 'Lectronic Link is a tiny outpost in cyberspace. But
its 7,000 subscribers include an unusual concentration of
artists, activists, journalists and writers. "It has a
regional flavor," says co-founder Stewart Brand. "You can
smell the sourdough."
Time Machines - Anyone who has read H.G. Wells or seen Back to the
Future knows how these things are supposed to work.
Certain obscure results of Einstein's relativity
theory suggest that there could actually be short-cuts
through the space-time continuum, but it's unlikely
that a human could squeeze through them.
Timothy Leary - Yes, he's back. At 72, the ex-Harvard professor who
encouraged a generation to "turn on, tune in, drop
out" now counts himself a cyberpunk. "The PC is the
LSD of the 1990s," he says.
Turing Police - British mathematician Alan Turing predicted in 1950
that computers would some day be as intelligent as
humans.
Virtual Reality - An interactive technology that creates an illusion,
still crude rather than convincing, of being
somewhere in an artificial world. The user generally
dons a computerized glove and a head-mounted display
equipped with a TV screen for each eye. Now
available as an arcade game.
Virtual Sex - The way it would work, says Howard Rheingold, is that
you slip into a virtual-reality bodysuit that fits with
the "intimate snugness of a condom." When your partner
(lying somewhere in cyberspace) fondles your computer
generated image, you actually feel it on your skin, and
vice versa. Miniature sensors and actuators would have
to be woven into the clothing by a technology that has
yet to be invented.
William Gibson - Gibson knows precious little about cybernetic
technology. When the success of Neuromancer enabled
him to buy his own computer, he was surprised that it
had a disk drive. "I had been expecting an exotic
crystalline thing. What I got was a little piece of a
Victorian engine that makes noise like a scratchy old
record player."

My views on this article.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
It is funny, to me, the amount of BAD PRESS that we (computer
users/cyberpunks) get. This article, combined with the recent blast of
"Computer Pornography" reports on various news stations, are making it
hard for US to get our message across.
I wouldn't consider myself a cyberpunk as these reporters
explain it, but I would call myself a cyberpunk as defined by US, the
people who know. Number one, not even close to a Majority of
"cyberpunks" take these new-age drugs. Many are totally clean to begin
with. Number 2, I do NOT like industrial music much at all, and the
line about cyberpunks liking RAVES and DISCO MUSIC cracked me up.
I was, however, glad to see mention of Operation Sundevil,
and its unconstitutional side (even though they sort of hid it in with
the definitions.)
I read the line about cyberpunks "dressing all in black, and
donning mirrored sunglasses.." and laughed. Reminded me of the
"stereotyping" done to many other people.
I cant quite figure out how they can make an analogy about
cyberpunks and "hippies". Cyberpunks are everywhere....as many a bad
Rehab has stated, (a cyberpunk) "could be your Doctor, Lawyer, and
even your professor." Just like Alcoholism, eh? We do not all LIKE the
same music, dress the same way, act and feel the same (like the
"hippies" did). And as far as REBELLING against something, it is not
rebelling against the "system" that is important....but getting the
message out that it is time for a change, and it is time for our
"elected government" to realize, technology is more than just the
MILITARIES problem. WE (as modern citizens) have to be taken into
consideration too.
How long can the FBI consider our property in computers DATA
instead of TEXT? Why does it NOT follow the first amendment? Nowadays,
you are in an outdated office that still uses paper for memos, and
notes. This is the 90's and we are progressing (technologically) as we
should BUT we are being held back by the governments present policies.
Why is it, a business's files are considered private, but regular
computer users files are considered DATA instead of speech, and we can
be held accountable for its content.
Unfortunately, I think it will take many years for our
government to realize the problems of todays society (electronically).
And destructive false articles like this will never help our cause.
This article seemed to infer that all cyberpunks are
disillusioned, and think they live INSIDE a computer. It seemed like
they were saying that cyberpunks want to live in a drugged out
anarchists world. I know to US this article is just plain ignorant,
BUT what about the computer-illiterate society? They will think we are
plain psychotic.
The Well? I'm sure its a large system, but I never heard of
it. You can tell that this article was written on the WEST COAST.
Seemed like they blamed all of the social problems of California on
cyberpunks.
Do I consider myself a Cyberpunk? I would have to answer not
really. Number one, I never played cyberpunk. I never read any
cyberpunk books, and I am not as REBELLIOUS as the public thinks they
are. But according to this article, I do many of the same things that
"cyberpunks" do. Seems they categorized all who call BBS's and all
who participate in the NETS are evil-ungood trash. Unso.
And the statement about one guy "accidentally running a
program that erased all his messages on a net" is plain bullshit. If
that happens, there's only 200 more places where your messages are
still at. Duh! No, this article wasn't written by a computer
illiterate, now was it.
So, in essence, it looks like TIME Magazine screwed up again.
What else is new.

The Lawless Society

Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #13.
Greetings and salutations to all. The following file is an article ripped
from the pages of Penthouse, June 1993 issue. It deals with some pretty
astounding facts concerning the drug laws in this not-so-great land of ours,
laws concerning Marijuana in particular. I discussed a few of the thing I
read in this article with a few of the users in my local area and most of them
seemed quite interested and surprised by what I told them. Hopefully this
article will enlighten you a bit as to where the priorities in our country
lie. I'm also hoping it will bring TLS out of the slump it's been in lately
and get these files back to the informational texts that they were originally
intended to be.
Well here it is...If this article pisses you off the way it pisses me off,
I would most definitely encourage you to write to your congressman, governor,
or even slick Willie himself up there in the white house.

Justice Goes To Pot
By
B.J. Oppenheimer
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
As you read this, I'll probably be behind bars, serving a possible 5 to 40
years in federal prison with no hope of parole. My house will have been
confiscated by the government, and a fine of $340,000 will have been levied
against me.
I'm a nonviolent offender with no prior record. Married for 20 years with
2 small children, I'm a college graduate and published writer. I have a good
reputation in the community and have been involved in many charitable
organizations.
My only crime was planting a handful of marijuana seeds....
When I was first arrested for growing pot last August, I freely admitted
my guilt, fully expecting to receive the relatively minor sentence usually
meted out in marijuana cases. Until recently, marijuana use and cultivation
was decriminalized in many places, and even now it's only a misdemeanor in
most states (including my own). It usually warrants nothing more than a
suspended sentence and a small fine when prosecuted at the state level. Last
year a man in New York was convicted of growing 154 plants -- Many more than I
am charged with -- and his only punishment was a $100 fine -- Less than $1 per
plant.
My penalty probably would have been similar if I'd been tried in state
court. But more and more these cases are being turned over to the federal
government for prosecution, where penalties are much stiffer. What would've
earned me, at most, a fine and probation in state court carries a mandatory
minimum sentence of five years (and a maximum of 40) when prosecuted on the
federal level.
It's all because of recently enacted mandatory minimum-sentencing laws.
They impose statutory minimums for all drug crimes and prohibit the judge from
and exercise of judicial discretion in arriving at a sentence. The judge is
enjoined against taking into account things like my reputation in the
community, charitable works, or lack of prior record. Since there's no such
thing as parole in federal prison anymore, if I'm sentenced to five years
(assuming I lose my case), that's how many I'll serve.
Chalk it up to the government's "get tough on crime" policy: So what if a
few undeserving people serve inflated sentences? It's worth it to keep the
streets free from crime. The problem is, rather than being tough on crime,
the net effect of mandatory minimums is to be soft on crime, violent crime.
Since there are no mandatory minimum sentences for offenses like rape, child
molestation, murder, aggravated assault, et cetera, violent criminals are
often released early to make room for nonviolent first offenders like me. The
average murderer now serves only six and a half years in jail (versus the five
year MINIMUM I'll serve).
But if our jail terms are similar, there's one important difference
between the murderer and me: He doesn't lose his house.
Even though my house was bought with legitimate earnings, and there was no
marijuana grown on my property, it was confiscated by the police shortly after
I was arrested. The primary reason given was that fertilizer was found in my
basement. My house was thus considered a "facilitator" of the crime, which
justified it's forfeiture. When I learned that the government had seized my
property on such flimsy pretenses, it infuriated me, but what bothered me even
more was that they did it without even trying me first.
Since the passage of the Comprehensive Crime Control Act of 1984, property
can be seized if one is merely SUSPECTED of using it in a crime. It's not
even necessary to be charged, much less convicted. It's up to the individual
to prove that he didn't use it illegally. And since this is a civil
forfeiture, and public defenders are only provided in criminal cases, he's
forced to foot the bill for a lawyer. Often he must put up a bond, sometimes
as much as $10,000, which usually makes fighting the forfeiture
cost-prohibitive.
In the majority of cases, the government simply steps in and take the
property without even bothering to charge anyone with a crime, and there's not
a thing to be done about it. Since 1984 almost two and a half billion dollars
in property has been seized this way.
There's another difference between the murderer and me. He isn't subject
to penalties for tax-stamp violation. Even though marijuana is illegal, in
many states you're required by law to buy tax stamps for its cultivation, at a
cost of $1000 per plant, something that's virtually impossible to do without
incriminating yourself. Yet even if you are somehow able to purchase the
stamps without getting arrested but don't actually affix the stamps to the
plants, in the wind and rain, you're still liable for a heavy fine. And they
don't just count the living, growing plants. They count the dead ones and
even the cutoff stems from plants that were thinned from the garden and thrown
away earlier. Even though the total weight of marijuana in my case was under
five pounds, with all these other factors added in, the fine was $340,000.
When I asked my lawyer how the government expected me to pay such an
astronomical fine, he said, "They don't. They want to wipe out your assets.
Then when, and if, you get out of jail, they intend to garnish your wages for
the rest. Of course, by that time there'll be all that interest..."
But the fine is just part of my penalty for tax stamp violation. It also
carries criminal (versus civil) penalties of up to five years in state prison.
That's on top of the 5 to 40 years I'll already be serving in federal prison.
All for the crime of putting a handful of marijuana seeds in the ground.
If this seems like a violation of the 8th Amendment ("Let the punishment
fit the crime"), it's not the only time the constitution's been ignored when
it comes to drug law. Confiscation of property without due process is a
violation of the 5th amendment, as is the imprisonment of drug offenders twice
(at the state and federal levels) for the same crime. The self-incriminatory
tax-stamp requirement is also a violation of the 5th amendment. Police can
now obtain search warrants based on anonymous tips, which is a violation of
the 4th amendment. And a defense attorney's legal fees can be seized in drug
cases, a violation of the 6th amendment.
But if drug laws are chipping away at the constitution, they're wreaking
havoc on our prison system. Federal prisons are currently at 146 percent of
capacity, and drug offenders serving mandatory minimum sentences make up 57
percent of the population (more than half had no prior arrests). At the
current rate of incarceration, nearly 70 percent of all federal inmates will
be drug offenders serving mandatory minimums by 1995.
The United States now imprisons more of its citizens per capita than any
other country in the world (455 per 100,000 people). That's compared to the
No. 2 country, South Africa, with 311 per 100,000.
As stated earlier, violent offenders must often be granted early release
to make room for this influx. In a recent four year period in Florida, more
than 130,000 inmates (including muggers, armed robbers, et cetera) were
released, and one out of three went on to commit new crimes. The FBI reports
that the rate of violent crimes in America increased by 24 percent from 1987
to 1991, and many people feel that mandatory minimums have a lot to do with
it.
But apart from the hypothetical increase in violent crime due to mandatory
minimums, there's the undeniable increase in tax payer costs. The National
Institute of Corrections estimates that in 1992 the United States built
facilities for 2,000 cells (at a cost of $100 million) PER WEEK to accommodate
the exploding prison population -- and construction costs were only part of
the total. It's been estimated that in five years the financial obligations
incurred by U.S. corrections could be double the current national deficit. On
top of that it costs and average of $20,000 a year to house, clothe, feed and
guard each of the 81,426 federal prisoners. And this is say nothing of the
increased cost of social services for inmates' families, which were previously
being provided for by the inmates themselves.
Over 30 million Americans regularly smoke marijuana, so it's not
surprising that a lot of people in this country feel that it should be
decriminalized. I'm sure that many people would disagree, but I doubt they'd
dispute the fact that the penalties for marijuana use are not only unjust and
illogical, an unconscionable waste of tax payer dollars. With violent crime
making us ALL live like prisoners, it's time to stop freeing murderers to make
room for marijuana users.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Well there ya go...Whether you are for or against the use of drugs like
marijuana, I think it is quite obvious that the government has got it's
priorities way the hell out of whack. Even if you think all drug
users/dealers should be put away, I hope you at least take a good hard look at
just how many constitutional rights are being infringed upon by some of these
laws.
The mere fact that the government makes pot illegal, yet expects you to
pay taxes on it if you're going to use it should tell you something. What
kind of government preaches to it's people about the evils of something like
drugs, but then wants to take a piece of profits made from their use?
Again...I strongly urge you to do something, anything, even if it's just
in you town about laws like these. Being for or against drugs is not the
issue, the issue is the way our government treats it's people! This
government is supposed to be BY the people FOR the people, and I can guarantee
you that not one vote was held outside of congress before these laws were
passed.
I myself was the victim of a mandatory minimum sentence. In the state of
New Jersey where I live was I was sentenced to a $350 fine, 1 year drivers
license suspension, and 60 hours of community service, all for not having
insurance on my car simply because I was out of work and couldn't afford the
$1000+ dollars per year (on a 1966 car!) On top of that I am forced to pay a
$250 surcharge each year for then next 3 years on my insurance or my license
will be suspended indefinitely. This sentence is DOUBLE what I would have
gotten if I had been driving drunk. Now you tell me who's more dangerous, me
or the drunk driver? I actually worked with a man who was convicted of drunk
driving on his THIRD offense and received lower penalties than I did for my
first offense on the insurance.
Do something about the way our country is being run! Things like this
will effect us all eventually!

The Lawless Society
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #14.
The following article is taken from the pages of Playboy, September 1993
issue. It deals with what are known as "Consensual Crimes" in America today.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
-=*=- Ain't Nobody's Business -=*=-
-The Absurdity Of Consensual Crimes In A Free Society-
By
Peter McWilliams
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
It is the best of times for the worst of crimes. And consensual crimes
are the worst of crimes, not for the usual reasons, but because they have no
business being crimes. Simply put, you should be able to do whatever you want
with your own person and property, so long as you don't physically harm the
person or property of another. Today's laws make many of those basic
consensual acts illegal. Here are a few examples:
* In Michigan alone, more than 135 people are currently serving life
sentences without possibility of parole for the mere possession of illegal
drugs.
* In nine states, unmarried sex between consenting heterosexual adults is
illegal.
* Oral sex (giving and receiving) is illegal in 20 states for heterosexuals
and 27 states for homosexuals.
* The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that, contrary to centuries of tradition,
members of the Native American Church may not legally use peyote in their
religious ceremonies.
* In 1992 a woman was stopped when entering the country with RU 486 abortion
pills that she intended to use to terminate her pregnancy, and the pills were
confiscated.
The laws prevailing in these cases and many others like them would appear
to run counter to the freedoms intended and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.
Thomas Jefferson explained in 1801: "A wise and frugal government, which
shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them free to
regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement." How far have we
strayed from this ideal?
Far.
Roughly half the arrests and court cases in the U.S. each year involve
consensual crimes. More than 350,000 people are in jail right now because of
something they did --something that did not physically harm another's person
or property. In addition, more than 1.5 million people are on parole or
probation for consensual crimes. And more than 4 million people are arrested
each year for doing something that hurts no one except, potentially,
themselves.
The injustice does not end there, of course. Throwing people in jail is
the extreme. Imagine how easily they could be fired, evicted, expelled,
denied credit, have their property confiscated, their civil rights stripped
away and their lives destroyed.
Yes, if we harm ourselves it may harm others emotionally. That's
unfortunate, but not grounds for putting us in jail. If that were the case,
every time person A stopped dating person B in order to date person C, person
A would run the risk of going to jail for hurting person B. If person C were
hurt by person A's being put in jail, person B could be put in jail for
causing person C to be hurt. This would of course hurt person B's mother, who
would see to it that person C goes to jail. Eventually we'd all end up in
jail. As silly as this sounds, it is precisely the logic used by some to
protect the idea of consensual crimes.
No one should be able to put us in jail, no matter what we do to ourselves
or our property --even physically harming them. Consensual crimes are not
without risk, but nothing in life is without risk. The sad or happy fact
--depending on how you feel about life-- is that we're all going to die. We
don't like to face that reality; it's one of our fundamental cultural taboos.
We like to think that if we can only keep ourselves and our loved ones safe,
none of us will ever die. Obviously, it doesn't work that way. Life is a
sexually transmitted terminal disease.
Sometimes we land on the sunny side of risk and get the reward. Sometimes
we land on the dark side and get the consequences. Either way, as responsible
adults we accept the results (sometimes kicking and screaming, but we accept
them nonetheless). The self-appointed moralists of our society have decided
however, that some activities are just too risky, and that the people who
consent to take part in them should be put in jail --for their own good and
for the good of all. Such paternalism creates consensual crimes.
Consensual crimes are sometimes referred to as victimless crimes. But the
label "victimless crime" has been so misused in the past few years that it has
become meaningless. Every scoundrel committing a real crime has declared it a
victimless crime, attempting to argue that a crime without physical violence
is a crime without a victim. Anyone who had been threatened, blackmailed, or
robbed at the point of a fountain pen instead of a gun knows that's not true.
Another group claiming protection under the victimless crime umbrella includes
those, such as drunk drivers, who recklessly endanger innocent (nonconsenting)
others. Because they didn't hit someone, they argue, it was OK that they were
going 70 mph the wrong way on a one-way street. Meanwhile, every
intolerance-monger attacking a consensual crime maintains that the crime did
have a victim. ("We're all victims" is a favorite phrase.) Besides, it's
hard to find any activity in life that does not, potentially, have a victim.
People who live in Florida may become victims of hurricanes, drivers of
cars may become victims of traffic accidents. Each time we fall in love we
may become the victim of another's indifference. Does this mean that we
should outlaw Florida, automobiles and falling in love? Of course not. It's
not our role as victims that puts such activities outside the realm of
criminal-law enforcement, but the fact that we, as adults, knowing the risks,
consent to take part in those activities.
Consent is one of the most precious rights we have. It is central to
self-determination. It allows us to enter into agreements and contracts. It
gives us the ability to choose. "Without the possibility of choice and the
exercise of choice," the poet Archibald MacLeish wrote, "a man is not a man
but a member, an instrument, a thing." Being an adult, in fact, can be
defined as having reached the age of consent. It is upon reaching the age of
consent that we become responsible for our choices, actions and behaviors.
(Nothing in this article, by the way, refers to children. It discusses only
activities between or performed by consenting adults.)
The laws against consensual crimes take away the right we all have to be
different. Even if you don't want to take part in any of the illegal
consensual acts, a culture that puts people in jail for them is also a culture
that will disapprove --forcefully, clearly and oppressively-- of something
different you MAY want to do.
If we let anyone lose his or her freedom without just cause, we all have
lost out freedom. The bell, as the poet said, tolls for thee.
With this thought in mind, here are the most popular consensual crimes:
gambling, recreational drug use, prostitution, pornography, obscenity,
homosexuality, adultery, bigamy, polygamy, regenerative drug use and other
unorthodox medical practices ("Quacks!"), unconventional religious practices
("Cults!"), unpopular political views ("Commies!"), transvestism, not using
safety devices (motorcycle helmets and seat belts, for example), public
drunkenness, jaywalking, loitering, vagrancy (so long as it doesn't become
trespassing or disturbing the peace) and ticket scalping.
Even if you don't want to take part in a consensual crime, defending the
right of others to do so has a trickle-down effect of tolerance, acceptance
and freedom for the things you DO want to do. (This may be one trickle-down
theory that works.) "My definition of a free society," said Adlai E.
Stevenson, "is a society where it is safe to be unpopular."
-=*=-
Here are the primary reasons consensual activities should not be illegal.
In my view, any one reason is sufficient to remove all laws against consensual
crimes from the books.
* It's un-American. America is based on personal freedom and the strength of
diversity, not on unnecessary limitation and slavish conformity. We are,
after all, "endowed by [our] creator with certain unalienable rights, that
among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Thus, we are
well-endowed. Let's use our endowment.
* It's unconstitutional. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights clearly
gives us the right to pursue our lives without the forced intervention of
self-appointed moralists, do-gooders and busy-bodies. Those who claim that
the Constitution is a "Christian document" are about as wrong as they could
be. (Which, considering how wrong these people can be, is pretty wrong.) The
founding fathers --George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson,
John Adams-- were not even Christians; they were Deists. They believed there
is a God, but did not believe the "revealed word" of any religion. The
founding fathers read the words of Jesus with respect, but they also turned
for inspiration to the works of Confucius, Zoroaster, Socrates and many
others. That almost everyone believes the founding fathers were all
"God-fearing Christians" is a perfect example of telling a big enough lie long
enough that it becomes "truth." George Washington summed it up succinctly:
"The government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the
Christian religion."
* It violates the separation of church and state. The Constitution not only
guarantees that we can freely practice the religion of our choice but also
that the government will not impose religion upon us. Almost all arguments in
favor of maintaining laws against consensual crimes have a religious
foundation. The biblical sexual prohibitions are oft quoted. The
restrictions against drugs come from the evangelical revivalism of the 1820's
and 1830's that directly gave us, among other delights, Prohibition. Even the
idea that should take care of our bodies --OR ELSE-- is the old
body-is-the-temple-of-the-soul argument espoused by Saint Paul.
* It's against the American principles of private property, free enterprise,
capitalism and the open market. If everything thus far has sounded hopelessly
liberal, here's a nice conservative argument: Our economic system is based on
private property. What you own is your own business. You can give it away,
trade it or sell it --none of which is the government's business. Whether you
make or lose money on the transaction is not the government's business (until
it's time to collect taxes). This is the system known as capitalism. We
fought (and recently won) a 45-year cold-and-hot war against communism to
maintain it. For the government to say that certain things cannot be owned,
bought, given away, traded or sold is a direct violation of both the sanctity
of private property and of the fundamental principles of capitalism.
* It's expensive. We're spending more than $50 billion per year catching and
jailing consensual criminals. In addition, I estimate that we're losing at
least an additional $150 billion in tax revenues: Every man, woman and child
in this country is paying $800 per year to destroy the lives of 6 million
fellow citizens involves in the tangled web of consensual acts, crime and
punishment. And moving the underground economy that is associated with
consensual crimes above ground would create 6 million tax-paying jobs.
* It destroys lives. A single arrest and conviction, even without a jail
sentence, can wipe one out financially and permanently effect one's ability to
get a job, housing, credit, education and insurance. In addition, there is
the emotional, mental and physical trauma of arrest, trial and conviction. If
jail time is added to his societally mandated torture, an individual's life
may be ruined.
* It corrupts law enforcement. Our law enforcement system is based on a
perpetrator and a victim. In consensual crimes, perpetrator and victim are
the same. Asking the police to control a crime that does not have a clear-cut
victim makes a travesty of law enforcement. Who are the police supposed to
protect? Theoretically, they arrest the perpetrator to protect the victim.
However, in a consensual crime, when the perpetrator goes to jail, the victim
goes too. Law enforcement implemented against consensual crime is a sham that
demoralizes police and promotes disrespect for the law. Because of the
artificially inflated cost of consensual crimes, people resort to real crimes
such as robbery and mugging. Thus we all become innocent victims.
* It promotes organized crime. Organized crime grew directly out of an
earlier unsuccessful attempt to legislate against a consensual act
--prohibition. Any time that something is desired daily by millions of
people, there will be an organization to meet that desire. If fulfilling that
desire is a crime, that organization will be organized crime. Organized
criminals seldom differentiate between crimes with victims and crimes without
victims. Furthermore, the enormous amount of money at their disposal allows
them to corrupt the best police, prosecutors, witnesses, judges, juries and
politicians money can buy. Once consensual crimes are no longer crimes,
organized crime will be out of business. (The other major financier of
campaigns against consensual crime is the religious right. Its leaders find
it easier to raise money with fear and hatred than with love. Organized crime
and the religious right. Strange bedfellows?)
* It corrupts the freedom of the press. Reporting on consensual crimes has
turned a good portion of the media into gossips, busybodies and tattletales.
With so much important investigation and reporting to be done concerning
issues directly affecting the lives of individuals, the nation and the world,
should we really be asking one of our most powerful allies --the free press--
to report who's doing what, when, where how and how often to their own (or
their partners') bodies?
* It keeps people from being responsible for their own behavior. If we
maintain that it is the government's job to keep illegal anything that might
do us harm, it implies that anything not illegal is harmless. Clearly, this
is not the case. Either people must be taught that what is legal is not
necessarily harmless, or our prohibitions must extend at least to automobiles,
cigarettes and alcohol. The current hypocrisy practiced in our society is
unjust, misleading and deadly.
* Finally, we have more important things to worry about. The short list of
problems facing our country and out world that are more deserving of our
precious resources includes: real crime (the chances are one in four that your
or someone in your household will be "touched" by a violent crime this year),
drunk drivers (22,000 deaths per year), insurance fraud (a $100 billion per
year problem that adds from 10 to 30 percent to all insurance premiums),
illiteracy (one in seven American adults is functionally illiterate and one in
20 cannot fill out a job application), poverty (14.2% of the population --35.7
million people-- lives below the poverty level and a good number of these are
children), prescription and over-the-counter drug abuse (more people are
addicted to these than to all the currently illegal drugs combined),
pollution, AIDS and last but certainly not least, the national debt ($4
trillion and growing faster than anything else other than religious
intolerance).
Consensual crimes create a society of fear, hatred, bigotry, oppression
and conformity. They support a culture opposed to personal expression,
diversity, freedom, choice and growth. The prosecution of consensual crimes
encourages ostracizing, humiliating and scorning people. This creates a
nation of sheep. "It has been my experience," wrote Abraham Lincoln, "that
folks who have no vices have very few virtues."
-=*=-
If you look into the arguments in favor of laws against consensual crime,
they are usually variations of "It's not moral." And where does the
objector's sense of morality come from? His or her religion. Some claim
community values as the basis of morality, but where does this set of
community values come from? The sharing of a similar religion. To a large
degree, we have created a legal system that is, to quote
priest-turned-philosopher Alan Watts, "clergymen with billy clubs." As Watts
wrote in Playboy more than 20 years ago:
"As is well known, the enormous political power of fundamentalists is what
makes legislators afraid to take laws against victimless 'sins' and crimes off
the books, and what corrupts police by forcing them to be armed preachers
enforcing ecclesiastical laws in a country where church and state are supposed
to be separate."
Don't think I'm against religion. I'm not. Individual morality based on
religious or spiritual beliefs is wonderful. It can be an excellent guide for
living one's own life. It is, however a horrible foundation for deciding who
does and does not go to jail. All it really does is allow a stat-sanctified
religion to pillory citizens for their choice of lifestyle.
-=*=-
"The function of government is to protect me from others," wrote the
columnist Arthur Hoppe. "It's up to me, thank you, to protect me from me."
Responsibility is the price of freedom. So is tolerance. We may not like
what others do with their persons and properties, but so long as they are not
harming our persons or property, we must permit them to do as they please. In
this way we guarantee ourselves the freedom to do as WE please, even though
others may not like it. The price of freedom is eternal --and internal--
vigilance: In the time it took you to read this article, 342 people were
arrested for consensual crimes in the U.S.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
And there ya have it. That article was adapted from a book written by
Peter McWilliams entitled "Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do". There's no
publisher listed with the article, but I'm sure you can find the book in a
bookstore if you really want to read it.

Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #15.

The Adventures of Sheetman
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If you are an avid reader of TLS files, you must CERTAINLY remember the
one describing my extreme boredom brought on from a move to a different town.
Well, basically, the boredom or loneliness is still the same, but work and
college have seemed to suck up most of the idle time that I used to have. Yes,
it does make things a bit more tolerable, but still boring.
Anyway, in that episode, I mentioned the reason for my relocation - My
stepfather. Well, at the time I got a lot of responses telling me that they
found my description of my stepfather as somewhat numerous. Comments like
"Brainchild" and "Wonderboy" were used as colorful descriptions of his
personality.
I feel, in the light of recent events, that a follow up on Wonder Boy is
not only necessary, but it may even brighten your day. EVERYTHING in here is
100% true, although you will surely doubt a few examples. Here it goes.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Living away from my parental units (again) has changed my view of my
stepfather. I am no longer FORCED to deal with his lunacy and ridiculous
philosophies on how I should live my life. (Life according to Wonderboy.)
It has changed from a viewpoint full of anger and rage, to one of humor and
gratitude (that I no longer have to live in his world.)
Last March, My mother got out of the Looney Bin (as I so often call places
concerning mental health - Ironically, I'm about a step away from one myself.)
When she returned she found my stepfather showing signs of what she thought
was regret (at himself for having driven me out of the house single handedly.)
She would call me and tell me this, but I never did believe her. I knew there
HAD to be something else behind his so-called sadness. I thought this mainly
because in the 13 years that i have been acquainted with him, I never knew him
to regret a thing....not even the most obvious screw-up in his personal life.
For those who DON'T know, my stepfather is a Manic-Depressive. My mother
is also manic depressive, but in normal state is depressive. Stepdad is
normally manic. His Lithium keeps him in a mostly normal state of mind. When
mom went into the looney bin in Arizona, Bob (my stepfather) decided not to
listen to the countless doctors who told him drinking alcohol would anhialate
his lithium balance, and he decided to drink anyway. That is what led to the
episode described in the earlier textfile. To sum it up, I would either be
forced to kill him, or move out. So, I moved out. When mom got back his
lithium balance was thrown off in the other direction because of his sudden
stopation of drinking. THAT is what was responsible for his so-called sorrow
for fucking me over. :)
In May, he decided that he didn't need to take his lithium anymore. He
said, "I'm a Man, and no little chemical can control my life. I can do it
myself." Just in case you don't know, the primary symptom of a Manic
Depressive is not taking their medicine. Especially in Normally Manic
patients. Well, he went to his normal medical doctor and told him he was
feeling fine without his medicine (What Manic wouldn't?) Well, moron (Doctor
Gilliberti who has an office on jack Martin Blvd. in BrickTown) said that was
good, and he didn't need his medicine anymore.
Well, that is when the fun began. Hang on, this is gonna get funny. He
went into a manic fit that lasted several weeks. Since I was not there, I
cannot give you the events in order of occurrence, but I will just throw them
at the wall and see what sticks. Here they are.
1) On a shopping trip to Caldors in Brick, he went up to several strangers
who were also shopping (mostly fat bald men - I dunno why) and grabbed their
nose and pulled till the person screamed. My mother was with him and couldn't
believe what was going on. BUT she didn't think anything unusual of this YET
(Go figure.)
2) On a trip to the beach, Wonderboy heard a group of 3 surf punks say the
word "FUCK". Well, he approached them and said "Now listen guys.....There's no
cursing on this beach, no cursing is allowed. By the way, My name is Bob
[shaking their hands]" They were shocked, but Bob eventually left to enjoy the
sand and sun. On their way out, the 3 surf punks turned into 8, and one of
them said the word "FUCK" again. Well, Bob went up to them again, and said
"Now look guys, I warned you. There's no cursing on this beach. Now, you can
curse, but only if it's used in the form of an adjective." So, to be a
ballbuster, one of the surfpunks said "You mean, we can say 'There's no
fucking cursing allowed on this beach?'" Bob replied, "Now ya got it. By the
way, My name's Bob [Shaking their hands again]." As he was leaving, one of
the surfers said "Bye BOB"....Bob walked up to him, stared at him intensely,
grabbed his nose and pulled.....Needless to say, the surfpunk screamed and ran
away thinking a lunatic is after him.
3) Seems at this time, Bob wore 3 wristwatches. One 5 minutes behind, one on
time, and one 5 minutes ahead. When asked about it, he replied "I working on a
mathematical equation to solve this problem we have with time. If we can just
eliminate this problem [The Space/Time Continuum] everything will run
smoothly."
4) Another primary symptom of normally manic patients is a lack of sleep.
Seems, on his way to work everyday, Bob would NOT go to work, but stop on the
side of any of he 3 major highways he happened to be on, pull over, lay down
on the side of an embankment, and admire nature. This is normal, eh?
5) Seems his delusion of former manic episodes (The one about him being
Sheetman - A Super Hero who wears a sheet as a cape) returned.
6) As he stated to my mother when she asked who he thinks he is, he said
"Don't worry, I don't think I'm god....just second in command." He said he
wasn't as powerful as god, but could still accomplish almost anything.
This IS THE MAN, My MOTHER LOVES.
Needless to say, he was committed to a mental hospital. Since then he has
been discharged and is living somewhat of a normal life again. The funny thing
is, he still doesn't see anything wrong in the things he did or thought when
he was in a manic episode.
I know this is one of the shortest TLS files, but I don't think anyone
else is working on one, so I'll just release this one as it is. Hope ya
enjoyed it.

Welcome To The Lawless Society. Issue #16.
Welcome to Issue 16. The following file is a slightly modifed version of
the bill of rights. It's written by John Perry Barlow, Co-Founder of The
Electronic Frontier Foundation. It's a bit amusing but quite a bit of it
rings true. Enjoy...

Bill O' Rights Light
By
John Perry Barlow
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
During the past two decades, the first ten ammendments to the Constitution
have been quietly revised by the state and federal judiciary, sparing us the
untidy political melee of a constitutional convention. The new Bill of
Rights, based on current case law, might look something like this:
Ammendment I
Congress shall encourage the practice of Judeo-Christian religion by its
own public exercise therof, and shall make no laws abridging the freedom of
responsible (unless such speech is in a digital form or contains material that
is copyrighted, classified, proprietary or offensive to non-Europeans,
non-males, differently abled or alternativle preferenced persons), or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble (unless such assembly takes place on
corporate or millitary property or within an electronic environment), or to
petition the government for redress of grievances (unless such grievances
relate to national security).
Ammendment II
A well-regulated militia having become irrelevant to the security of a
free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms against another
shall remain uninfringed (excepting such arms as may be afforded by the poor
or those preferred by pushers, terrorists and organized criminals, which shall
be banned).
Ammendment III
No soldier shall, in any time of peace, be quartered in any house without
the owner's consent, unless that house is thought to have been used for the
distribution of illegal substances.
Ammendment IV
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and
effects against unreasonable searches and seizures may be suspended to protect
public welfare. Upon the unsupported suspicion of law enforcement officials,
any place or conveyance shall be subject to immediate search, and any such
places or conveyances, or property within them, may be permanently confiscated
without further judicial proceeding.
Ammendment V
Any person may be held to answer to a capital or otherwise infamous crime
involving illicit substances, terrorism or upon any suspicion whatever, and
may be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or
limb (once by the state courts and again by the federal judiciary), and may be
compelled by various means (including the forced submission of breath samples,
bodily fluids or encryption keys) to be a witness against himself, refusal to
do so constituting an admission of guilt, and may be deprived of life, liberty
or property without further legal delay, and any private property thereby
forfeited shall be dedicated to the discretionary use of law enforcement
agents without just compensation.
Ammendment VI
In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to speedy
and private plea-bargaining before entering a plea of guilty. The accused is
entitled to the assistance of underpaid and indifferent counsel to negotiate
his sentence, except where such sentence falls under mandatory sentencing
requirements.
Ammendment VII
In suits at common law, where the contesting parties have nearly unlimited
resources to spend on legal fees, the right of a trial by jury shall be

====================
=======================

Cards.
ATM's
=====
============
==============
==============
============
The oil in the house will start to burn and
by the time you get it out the other end (at you bumper) you'll have a thick
blue smoke that will blind traffic behind you and definitely cause a little
nausea.
Pain Causer
===========

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
If one wants cable for free, one has two options.

And of course, if you
are half the hacker you think you are, you shouldn't be paying for these
anyway.

====================

This night by the lake seems to be the moment. She is naked, you are naked;
she holds your erection in her hands as she sits astride you and seems ready
to insert it.
Once again...If anyone would care to write for TLS on just about any subject
please leave mail to either myself or Hegz on the boards listed below.
If you would like to join TLSNet you can most likely download the application
file from the board that you got this file from. The file should be named
