Editor's Welcome
----------------
Welcome to the second issue of the Pasco BBS Magazine. Thank you to all who
left messages saying they liked the first issue. Also, thank you to those
Sysops who have agreed to become Distribution Sites. The distribution of the
magazine was time consuming, not to mention the killer phone bill, so having
Distribution Sites should make that job a little easier. The first ever Pasco
BBS Magazine Distribution Sites are named below. Thanks! More should be
listed as time goes on.
We also learned the hard way about having to run corrections. Of all the
mistakes to make, we had the Xevious BBS phone number incorrect. The correct
number for Nels Anderson's board is listed towards the end of the magazine.

Fishnet Profile
---------------
Fishnet began as a Pasco County based echo network which has moved into
Hillsborough County, and now a board in Louisiana has just signed up. Fishnet
was designed to be a casual network and seems to be catching on, as inquiries
have come from other states as well.
Fishnet started out as an idea last fall. Mike Laffey, Sysop of The
Fourels BBS, tells the story. "Fishnet was started when Tony Evans of
Luddite BBS asked me if I wanted to echo a few mail conferences between our
boards. I liked the idea, and since Tony had the net software already setup
on his board, we agreed that I would act as hub (he did all the hard work
<grin>). I put together a few casual conferences to keep the topics light,
and a info package to upload to other boards, and Tony and I started echoing
mail."
The Network Hub for Fishnet, The Fourels BBS, is located in New Port Richey.
It runs TriBBS software, as do most of the Fishnet boards. The Fourels dates
back to September 1991, went down in March of 1992 due to technical
difficulties, but has been back up since September. The name is short for
Laffey's Lectronic Land of Leisure, the four L's. All Fishnet mail is echoed
through The Fourels, as the other boards, or nodes, all call the hub.
The Big Pit BBS in Hudson and Heavenly BBS in Lutz joined in echoing Fishnet
messages early on, however, the Heavenly BBS has since dropped out of the
network. Dr. Duck's BBS in New Port Richey and Interzone BBS in Tampa joined
late in 1992. In January Night City South in Lutz and The Emerald City BBS in
Doyline, Louisiana signed up. Seven boards are now carrying the Fishnet
conferences.
Mike Laffey calls Fishnet "a simple, casual network" with "a friendly
atmosphere." The available conferences do reflect that tone. What Zup is the
general message conference, Swap Shop is for advertising things for sale, and
Yo Dudes is especially for teens. A fourth conference, Net Sysops, is for
Fishnet Sysops.
To join Fishnet a board must be able to do QWK mail transfers, and there are
no fees. For more information call The Fourels BBS. Mike Laffey will be
glad to help, and says "we are always ready to add more."

Westcoast 813 BBS Directory Feature
-----------------------------------
The Westcoast 813 BBS Directory is a comprehensive list of bulletin boards in
the 813 area code. The editor, Clark Gilbo, admits he didn't really know what
an enormous undertaking this would be when he started the directory last
October. The January issue listed 460 bulletin boards systems, and by using
abbreviations gave a lot of detailed information. The 813 area code includes
all or part of Pasco, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk, Sarasota, Highlands,
Hardee, Manatee, Okeechobee, Charlotte, Lee, DeSota and Collier counties.
From Pasco County to beyond Naples, the 813 area code stretches along
Florida's west coast. Clark Gilbo was the former editor of the Pasco BBS
Newsletter, which was out for three issues a little over a year ago. He
decided he would do a list instead of a newsletter, and the list has grown
each month. The Pasco BBS Magazine asked Clark how he finds all these
numbers.
"I come up with numbers by going through BBSes. I go through their message
bases, some boards have BBS lists, some have numbers on the end screen. I
usually turn on my capture, and I let my capture go until I get off the board,
and at a later time I edit the information. I go through the node lists of
different networks. I rely on Pinellas and Tampa BBS listings, but I always
ask permission to use information from other lists. There are many ways to
find numbers."
The Westcoast 813 BBS Directory is setting up a network of Distribution
Centers throughout the area. The Pegboard BBS in Clearwater is the main hub
for the Westcoast 813 BBS Directory. It is hoped having Distribution Centers
will save the editor a few bucks on the phone bill, and allow him to
concentrate on the southern reaches of the 813 area code more heavily. In
time these boards will carry a FidoNet conference exclusively for Westcoast.
This would allow for quicker updates and someday distribution of the directory
itself.
Clark Gilbo talks of the future for the Westcoast Directory. "I'd like to see
a bigger listing, which I believe it will be soon. The February issue should
be larger than January's. Will be adding a list of the different exchanges as
well. I'd also like to see ANSI color and dialing directories for different
communications programs."

PKZip Release Creates a Stir
----------------------------
PKWare finally did release the newest version of their popular Shareware
archive utility and it sure created a stir. From false virus reports to real
bugs, Phil Katz had a rough January. The long awaited release of the new
PKZIP and PKUNZIP did occur right after the first of the year, but problems
began right away.
PKWare version 2.04 does have several new features and introduces a new form
of data compression known as "Deflating." This new compression algorithm has
varying levels of compression and speed available. The new version also has
the ability to "span" a .ZIP file across multiple disks and format the
destination disks on the fly. Other new features include using XMS/EMS
memory and auto CPU type detection to optimize performance. The new version
is Novell Network aware and can automatically detect if DPMI (DOS Protected
Mode Interface) support is available. The new release also featured PKSFX
Junior and PKUNZIP Junior, which are smaller, more limited versions of the
originals. Registered users received the benefit of the new PKCFG program,
which allowed additional configuration of the utility.
The first problem was exposed right after release, however, this problem was
not with the PKWare release, but with a virus protection program. Norton's
Anti-Virus program mistakenly identified the program as having the Maltese
Amoeba virus. Despite the fact that this bug occurred in copies downloaded
directly from PKWare's BBS, some Sysops posted warnings that the file was
corrupted. Other virus detection programs, such as McAfee Associates' SCAN,
did not detect a problem with the new release. There had been several
hacked files pretending to be the new version, so it is hard to blame those
who reacted to the virus reports.
The Maltese Amoeba is a common virus discovered in September of 1991 in
Ireland. The virus can be detected using McAfee's SCAN, and other virus
detection software, and removed by deletion of infected files. The Maltese
Amoeba virus becomes memory resident and available memory decreases. On March
15 and November 1 the virus attacks disk sectors of all drives including hard
drive. When the system is rebooted, the following poem appears:
"To see a world in a grain of sand,
And a heaven in a flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
and eternity in an hour.
THE VIRUS 16/3/91"
The poem is followed by system lock-up. If the reports had been true this
virus could have caused serious damage, but the virus reports were false
alarms.
Once the virus scare was over, there were two schools of thought by system
operators on conversion of their file libraries over to the new .ZIP format.
Some Sysops wanted to switch over as soon as possible to keep from having both
versions on their boards. Other Sysops took a wait and see attitude, and
figured, as is the case with any new software, that waiting would expose any
bugs.
Those that made the quick switch found out about the incompatibility problems
right away. Maybe a user left a message saying they could not unzip the files
they downloaded, or an upload locked up their system. The old version is
simply not compatible with the new and the old version cannot unzip the new
archives. Sysops began frequently updating their news screens to keep users
informed. PKWare took some heat from some Sysops, after all, the new version
had been in beta testing for almost two years.
The newest version of PKUNZIP.EXE is not compatible in the test mode with the
earlier versions, but a prior beta test version is. Beta test version 1.93,
of PKUNZIP.EXE, can test both old and new archives and keeps volume labels
intact. Some boards stayed with the old PKZIP.EXE, and used the beta version
of PKUNZIP.EXE. Some other minor bugs have been reported and there have been
rumors of more serious problems. It was PKWare's intention to not have the
"authentic verification" be compatible between versions, but these other
problems will require a bug fix release.
In PKWare's defense, version 2.04 does offer a significant improvement in
compression ratios over the original version. It is not uncommon for an
upgrade of this magnitude to contain a few bugs. PKWare does have a good
reputation and it is expected these problems will be corrected quickly. But
in the highly competitive archive market, Phil Katz's Shareware company took
some hits during January.
Most Sysops will go ahead with the conversion, so users will need to download
PKZ204C.EXE eventually. The PKWare BBS can be reached at (414) 354-8670, the
board is located in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. More on this story next month.

The NASA Spacelink is not like a typical bulletin board, but probably has
more bulletins than any BBS around. NASA appropriately calls it a Space
Related Informational Database. Spacelink is located at NASA's George C.
Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Maintained by NASA's
Public Services and Education Branch, it is free of charge and accepts calls
up to 9600 baud.
The NASA Spacelink runs on a Data General Eclipse MV-7800 minicomputer.
The software was designed especially for the system and donated by Data
General Corporation. The NASA Spacelink was designed for teachers, but has
been receiving calls from all walks of life since it was made available to
the public in 1988. Calling is a little different than calling BBSes, so
let's take a guided tour of the NASA Spacelink.
After logging in, and seeing some background information, the main menu will
direct you through the database. The main menu has ten categories to choose
from, including a NASA Spacelink Overview. All of the bulletins can be
downloaded, so the information can be reviewed at your leisure. The main
menu categories are Current NASA News, Aeronautics, Space Exploration: Before
the Shuttle, Space Exploration: The Shuttle and Beyond, NASA and its Centers,
NASA Educational Services, Classroom Materials, Space Program Spin-
offs/Technology Transfer and International Space Year. Each of these will
bring up a sub-menu when selected.
The menu for Current NASA News offers seventeen different informational
bulletins. You can read about NASA Educational Programs, NASA News
Releases, NASA Speeches, Launch Dates and Payloads, Year in Review, Marshall
Center Weekly Newspaper, Daily News/NASA Select TV Schedule, Newsletter for
Educators or Upcoming Shuttle Flights. Status Reports are also available
for the Magellan, Galileo, Ulysses, Hubble Telescope, Compton GRO and Mars
Observer missions. Under Aeronautics the categories are Basic Research and
Technology, High Performance Aircraft and Research, Subsonic Aircraft and
Transportation, New Aviation Applications, NACA 75th Anniversary, Ames-Dryden
Flight Research Facility and The National Advisory Committee on Aeronautics.
If you choose Space Exploration: Before the Shuttle, you can read about A
Brief History of Rocketry, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo Lunar Program, Skylab,
Apollo Soyuz Test Project, Astronauts, Early Launch Vehicles, Satellites,
Space Observatories and Planetary Probes. The section on Space Exploration:
The Shuttle and Beyond has fifteen different informational bulletins. The
Space Shuttle, Astronauts, Current NASA Launch Vehicles, Future Launch
Vehicles and Propulsion Systems, Earth Observation and Communications
Satellites, Space Observatories, Planetary Probes, Spacelab & Other Space
Science Missions, Space Station Freedom, Future Plans, U.S./Russian
Cooperation in Space, NASA Computers, HRMS (Radio Signal Search), Earth
Observation Reports and Orbital Debris Study.
I think you get the idea on just how much information is available to NASA
Spacelink callers. The sub-menu for NASA and its Centers has thirteen more
bulletins on subjects like The Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, NASA
Objectives, NASA Budget Requests, NASA and UFO's, NASA Art Program and a
Biography of NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin. The sub-menu for Educational
Materials has nineteen different selections ranging from Science fairs to the
Space Physics Workshop for Teachers. If Space Program Spin-offs/Technology
Transfer is selected at the main menu eight more bulletins appear and six
more are found under the International Space Year.
One other nice feature is that graphics files are available. There are .GIF
images taken from planetary probes and Macpaint images of all past manned
mission logos.
NASA is constantly updating the Spacelink database, so some of the above
bulletins may be somewhat different. There is plenty of on-line help
available and the system does allow callers to leave questions for NASA.
The NASA Spacelink can be reached in Huntsville, Alabama at (205) 895-0028.

Bass Class Review
-----------------
If you enjoy bass fishing, than Dick Olsen's Bass Class is for you. It is not
only a game, but a tutorial on bass fishing. The game does not feature the
tournament mode, like Dick Olsen's original fishing game BassTour, but does
have a lot of the same features. When you play Bass Class you can learn the
basics of bass fishing.
The first thing Bass Class does is allow you to pick from several lakes to
fish. There are different rods to choose from and a tackle box with dozens of
different lures. Even a couple drops of fish formula can be used on your lure
choice. The bass boat has both and outboard and trolling motor, live-well,
LCD fish finder and a contour map feature.
The game does offer mouse support and on-line help. There are plenty of "hot
tips" for you bass fisherman, and a glossary of fishing terms. The Shareware
game Bass Class is a must for bass fishermen.

PascoNet Update
---------------
Last month the Pasco BBS Magazine ran a feature on PascoNet. Rob Marlowe,
Sysop of the Inner Sanctum BBS and Network Echo Coordinator for PascoNet,
wanted to let us know he agreed with Ralph Lobianco on the future of
PascoNet. "I completely agree with Ralph that the more the merrier, and we
would both love to see all of the local boards join PascoNet."
Most of the PascoNet mail actually passes through the Inner Sanctum, rather
than the Studio-PC BBS, as was said in last month's issue. PascoNet is
featured on a growing number of Pasco County boards.

PCBoard and Wildcat! most popular among Pasco Sysops
----------------------------------------------------
In Pasco County the Sysops prefer PCBoard and Wildcat! bulletin board
software. There are close to 40 BBSes in Pasco, and PCBoard is up on eight
of them and Wildcat! is up on five. Virtual and TriBBS are running on four
boards each. There are other BBS software programs being used, but by no more
than a couple of boards each.
Something else interesting about Pasco BBSes is that nearly half are running
at 2400 baud and almost half were not around in 1991.

BBS Basics
----------
Calling a BBS for the First Time
Long log-on questionnaires and call back verification may be the complaint
of the veteran BBSer, but can you remember back to your first call to a BBS?
It can be a little confusing, especially for the new computer user.
Bulletin Boards do have a habit of assuming the user knows what to expect
when calling.
Many first time BBS callers are calling on their first PC, and are using the
inexpensive communications software which came with the computer. A friend
has given them some BBS numbers, so they call. They see some commands they
don't understand and a bunch of jumble which seems to make little sense.
The new caller never gave configuration of his computer and software for
graphics a thought, and the software may not even support graphics to begin
with. Many potential users never call back and rely on disk vendors for
Shareware. Using a decent communication software package can make bulletin
boards a much friendlier place to visit.
Most of today's BBSes use ANSI or similar graphics. The graphics are
attractive, and great for games, but do slow down the transmission speed.
If you are calling with a slow speed modem, this can cause a substantial
slow-down. One of the first questions which many BBS software programs ask
when calling is if you want graphics. Unfortunately, some BBS software
programs default into graphics and some have no way to exit the graphic mode.
This is a matter of preference, some people love graphics, other hate it.
Now that you dialed the BBS number, and settled the graphics question, you
should be at the welcoming or log-on screen. The first screen generally
gives information about the board itself. BBS name, location, baud rates,
available networks, or anything else the Sysop deems appropriate. Then you
are generally asked to give your name. You should always use your real name
when logging on to a bulletin board, even if the board does allow fictitious
names (handles). The Sysop has the responsibility and right to know who is
accessing his BBS. When you enter your name for the first time, the BBS
software will ask if you have your name spelled correctly, or if you are a
new user. After selecting new user another screen, or screens, appear with
information which the Sysop wants first time callers to know. Normally,
these screens contain things like welcoming comments, rules or where to find
help. You will then be asked if you want to register with the BBS. If you
answer yes, a questionnaire will follow.
The new user questionnaires vary from board to board, but most ask for name,
address and telephone number. From there it depends on how the Sysop has
set up his BBS software. Some Sysops ask only a few pertinent questions,
others have questionnaires which seem endless. Again, always use real and
accurate information when answering the questions. The questions normally
include a couple on setting up the BBS software for your use. Things like
page length, transfer protocol, or hot keys. If you are not sure, use the
recommended (default) settings. What is selected can be changed later.
After filling out the questionnaires most boards give limited access to the
BBS until the verification process is completed.
The verification process can take many forms. Some Sysops will take the
time to call by voice each and every caller to their board. Other Sysops
rely on the new caller ID technology and some force new callers into a call
back verification. In this day of caller ID, call-back verification seems
like an awful lot of hassle to put the novice BBS caller through. What
happens is the BBS will log you off and try to call back at the number you
entered during the questionnaire. This way the Sysop knows that is a valid
telephone number and that the information provided by the user is most
likely accurate. The problem is that many first time callers have trouble
setting up their modem to answer the phone and are still looking at the
manual when the verification call comes. The call-back software has
significantly improved, some can be activated from the keyboard. Again, it
is the Sysop's option which type of verification is used.
On your first call to a BBS you will most likely have limited options. Some
boards will not allow file transfers and others will not allow anything
until the user is verified and upgraded. The Sysop only does this to
protect himself, and his substantial investment. It is the Sysops option on
how much the unverified user can do on his board.
Next month we will talk about the main menu and begin discussing what is
available on bulletin boards.

BBS Symbols
-----------
Have you ever seen something like, :-), in a BBS message and wondered what
it was. Some users like to add symbols to messages to convey some sort of
feeling. Some think of them as emotional icons, or "emoticons." You have
probably seen <grin>, which obviously indicates a smile. Some of the other
symbols are far more complex and not so self explanatory. Here are some of
the more commonly seen symbols. It may help to turn your head, as most
symbols are on their side.

Screen all Uploads
In last month's issue we ran a couple of stories on Sysops who had some
legal problems. One way that all system operators could reduce the chances
of a run-in with the law, and contribute to the public good as well, is to
screen uploads. There are a tremendous amount of people into BBSing and not
all of them follow, or understand, the rules. Sysops should look at uploads
to see if a commercial or adult program may have been uploaded. Too many
Sysops allow files to be downloaded right after they're uploaded.
Some boards still post uploads immediately in an attempt to post files a
little quicker than the other boards. It may be a little easier, but when
pirated commercial programs or adult related files are made available to all
users, the entire BBS community suffers. It has been seen on some of the
largest BBSes in the country, but seems irresponsible.
Some might say, kiddingly, the Sysop should test and review each program
before making it available to the users. I say the Sysop owes it to the
public to at least look at it.

The Thirty BBS Commandments
---------------------------
The Thirty BBS Commandments have appeared all over the county on various
bulletin boards. It is a tongue-in-check look at BBS rules. The premise
usually goes something like this:
It has finally happened. Some very intelligent Sysop gave some great though to
how a BBS should be operated and came up with the Thirty BBS Commandments.
We would be very remiss if we kept these from you, so here they are:
1. Thou shall love thy BBS with all thy heart and all thy bytes.
2. Thou shalt remember thy name and password.
3. Thou shalt not POST IN ALL CAPS!
4. Thou shalt use thy real name.
5. Thou shalt only call a BBS two times a day.
6. Honor thy SysOp.
7. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's password, nor his or her
real name, computer, software, nor any other thing belonging to
him or her.
8. Thou shalt not post messages that are stupid, worthless, or
have no meaning.
9. Thou shalt use the English language properly.
10. Thou shalt spell thy words correctly.
11. Thou shalt not use a "handle" unless thine computer is made by Commodore.
12. Thou shalt delete thine olden messages.
13. Thou shalt help other users.
14. Thou shalt not post anonymously when offering criticism.
15. Thou shalt keep thy foul language to thyself.
16. Thou shalt not occupy thy BBS with thine arguments, for
Verily, I say unto thee that thou shalt maketh a fool of
thyself.
17. Woe be unto the user who attempt to crash thy BBS, for he or
she shalt be cast out from the sanctuary of thy hobby and
must repent by doing 40 days and 40 nights of penance of
voice-only communications.
18. Thou shalt first dial BBS numbers during the day by way of
voice line to assure correct numbers.
19. Thou shalt not beg for E-Mail.
20. Thou shalt not post messages while drunk.
21. Thou shalt confine thy messages to those of friendship,
requests for assistance, aid to the needy, advice, and
advancement of thy hobby; and thou art obligated to repel any
who wouldst transgress upon those commandments.
22. If thou doth promise to reply to a message and thou doth not,
then surely thou shalt spill coffee into thy keyboard and
burn out thy central processing chip.
23. Thou shalt not giveth any false information when applying for
membership to a BBS, for verily it is written that
whosoever shall do so will surely be found out and thy
welcome on all boards will be thus denied forever and ever.
24. Thou shalt log on properly and in accordance with the SysOp's
rules.
25. Thou shalt observe BBS time limits.
26. Thou shalt not upload "worm" programs.
27. Thou shalt not ask stupid questions that are already fully
explained in the BBS instructions.
28. Thou shalt not exchange copy protected software thru the BBS.
29. Thou shalt not violate applicable state/federal/local laws
and regulations affecting BBS telecommunications, or thy will
feel the wrath of thy judicial system.
30. Thou shalt not hack.

Corrections and Clarifications
------------------------------
We learned the hard way about having to run corrections. The number listed
for the Xevious BBS in the January issue was incorrect, and the correct
number is (805) 875-3618. Nels Anderson was interviewed in the first issue.
Do to lack of response, the BBS Classified Ads section will not be run at
this time.
